Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Pays Tribute to Buddy Holly

John Mellencamp headlined all-star tribute to one of rock's largest icons CLEVELAND, Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Case Western Reserve University hosted the eighth annual American Music Masters program, honoring 1986 inductee Buddy Holly, on December 5 and 6, 2003.
"Buddy Holly is truly one of the icons of rock and roll music," said Terry Stewart, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. "In his tragically brief career, Buddy Holly created a body of work that is still reverberating through the rock world today."

"Buddy was among the first group of musicians inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and now being a member of this very select group is a wonderful tribute to him as a person and to his great talent."
- The highlight of the series was a Tribute Concert at the Cleveland Play House on Saturday, December 6 at 8:00 p.m. This sold out concert included performances by John Mellencamp, Tommy Allsup, Marshall Crenshaw, Bill Pinkney and the Drifters, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Nanci Griffith, Maria Elena Holly, Wanda Jackson, Lenny Kaye, Kevin Montgomery and John Mueller.
- An interdisciplinary conference on Holly's music, life and legacy, sponsored by Case, took place on Saturday, December 6 at Case's Ford Auditorium in the Allen Memorial Library. The conference featured a keynote address by Greil Marcus. Bill Malone also gave an address. Panelists and musicians included Tommy Allsup, Marshall Crenshaw, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, John Goldrosen, Nanci Griffith, Jim Henke, Maria Elena Holly, Wanda Jackson, Lenny Kaye, Bill Pinkney of the Drifters and Warren Zanes.
- An evening featuring the Raveonettes took place on Friday, December 5 at the Rock Hall.
- The Museum opened a Buddy Holly exhibit on Friday, December 5 in the Ahmet M. Ertegun Exhibition Hall. The exhibit was created in conjunction with the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock, Texas.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum exists to educate its visitors, fans and scholars from around the world about the history and significance of rock and roll music. The Museum carries out this mission through its efforts to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret this art form.
