- Buddy proposed to his wife, Maria Elena, on their first date. They were married two weeks later.
- Paul McCartney purchased the rights to the entire Buddy Holly song catalog on July 1, 1976.
- As teenagers, Buddy Holly and his band opened concerts for Elvis and Bill Haley and His Comets. It was after opening for Elvis that Buddy started performing in the new rock'n'roll style and began to leave behind his country sound.
- Buddy's last name was originally spelled "Holley." It was misspelled as "Holly" on his first recording contract, and the error was never corrected.
- Waylon Jennings, part of Buddy's backup group at the time, was supposed to be on the fateful flight, but gave up his seat to the Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson).
- Since his death, Buddy Holly's records have sold over 40 million copies.
- In 1958, Buddy Holly and the Crickets became only the second caucasion rock and roll band to tour Australia and England. They were the first caucasion group to perform at New York's famed Apollo Theater.
- Buddy Holly and the Crickets were the first self-contained rock'n'roll group that wrote and performed their songs.
