I don't think anyone is going to do your homework for you. Here's a link www.biography.com. You can read more about him.

Welcome to the board, Perry. I'm sorry that we don't have anything set up to facilitate your request. But as strong_luis pointed out, there's tons of stuff online where you can find out about Buddy. Some prominent links are featured right here on this site: https://www.buddyhollyband.com/bh/read/biographies/index.html?nav=navhb. Hope this is useful to you.

Btw, I'm going to delete the duplicate post you made in the other forum so there is no fragmentation.

Thanks for helping out, strong_luis.

I am amazed at the reply which said noone is going to do my homework for me! I am doing tonnes of research. All I wanted was some people to tell me why they are fans, their personal thoughts etc, why they like Buddy so much to give my report a different angle. I can get the facts easily, what I wanted was some emotion, but I seem to have offended some people.

Hey Perry,
You've offended no one... I'm sure s_l was simply being funny. At least now it's clear what you are looking for. It did not come through in your last post. That's why I too suggested bio links.

There aren't too many fans around here with the board being new and all. But I hope someone can send you their thoughts and feelings on Buddy. Since this is a school project and you seem earnest, I'll try and post a bulletin on the homepage about this thread. Maybe some visitors to the site will end up reading this discussion and feel inspired to send you something. It would be a good idea to post your email too if somebody wants to send you a message that way.

Either way, good luck with the project! Let us know how it goes.

You didn't say that in your original post and you didn't offend anyone.

hey Perry,
I had to do a school project on Buddy Holly two years ago, so I can kinda relate to what you're looking for. This piece of advice is important: A lot of his music is hard to find, but when you really decide to look, it's amazing what you can find on the web on what people have said about him, whether it's true or not (that's the only downfall). So enjoy this project, because if it weren't for the project I did, I wouldn't have found this awesome music. If you want emotion and personal thoughts as to why Buddy's music rules my CD player, though I was born 30 years and 2 months too late (I'm 15, too young to even be part of the first rock and roll generation)here they are. First of all, the guitar riffs sound more than just four chords. (his later songs contained more than 4 chords, but all of his early stuff was only 4 chords-honestly)Second, the way his voice manipulates the lyrics. If you look at the actual written lyrics, often, it's only one verse and the chorus repeated about three or four times. But because he sings it different everytime, if you're just listening to the music absent-mindedly, you don't realize that there's only one verse. And his influence is still evident today, not only in guitar playing (his band was also the first to be self contained-write and produce their own stuff) but also in vocalists today. If you've ever heard of a rock group called Puddle of Mudd, listen to the song She ------ Hates Me. I doubt that they were directly influenced by Mr.Holly, but the way that the vocalist sings is definitely reminiscent of Buddy. he was so determined to have people listen to what he was listening to in his head. This is a bit off topic, but it does realte to his band. I don't know what sort of research you've done, but have you noticed that he went through at least 3 bass players (Don Guess, Joe B. Maudlin, and Waylon Jennings), at least 3 rhythm gutair players (Sonny Curtis, Niki Sullivan, and Tommy Allsup), but only 2 drummers, (Jerry Allison and Carl Bunch, and the only reason Carl Bunch is included is because the Crickets broke up before the fatal tour, and Buddy didn't have a drummer.) Okay, back to Buddy. Why don't I get with the times and listen to what everyone else is listening to? I do. Sometimes, and I did. But I listento Buddy because his stuff is just good. There's no other way to explain it. I love to surf the web and read what others have to say about this 22 year old (going on forever), even though I realize that some of it may be false. (Interesting tidbit-do you know what haunted Waylon Jennings for years after Buddy's death? Hint: it has something to do with a conversation between Waylon and Buddy right before the plane left.) He wrote and recorded pretty much everything that is avaiable right now in less than two years. I'm pretty positive that he has more that 160 songs. If you're going to use any part of this in your report, think about this. I wasn't born during that generation, nor anywhere close to that generation, as already stated. I have no obligation, as it is, to listen to this music, because it's not of my generation. I have plently of other choices as to what I want to listen to. Rap, rock, country, jazz, blues, and so forth. But I listen to Buddy because I think he knew what was going on. There's so many quotes about him, I'll give you some, because I feel like I'm rambling on, so I might as well put something useful into this reply.
Waylon Jennings: "When someone asks where I thought music would take Buddy, I say, you're asking the wrong question. The question is "where was Buddy going to take music"?"
Anonymous: "Q:How many people did Buddy influence? A; How many days do you got?"
J.I. Allison :"When someone like Paul Macarteny says 'without the Crickets, there would be no Beatles,' I say, 'escuse me, I'd like to hear that again!"
I don't know if this is going to help you. Please put up another post if you have a more specific question, because your idea of having personal thoughts in your report is a good idea, especially, if they're older people and actually remember Buddy's stuff being broadcast, etc. One last piece of advice: don't take anything in the Buddy Holly Story for actual fact, because they didn't take a few theacterical liscences with the movie, they took alot!

...because a lot of stuff that is out right now is no good. I'm 19 and hate rap, heavy metal rock, pretty much all Alt. rock, Emo., ummm you name and most likely I hate it. Part of the reason is just the sound and the other part are the lyrics which are just plain dumb.

That's it. I agree with you that some of the music out there is no good, especially rap, but there is some good stuff. Is that why you like Buddy Holly? Because a lot of the music right now is no good? I think that was the good thing about his (Buddy's) music. nobody was keen on sounding the same as the next guy, even if they all did covers of each other, there was so much out there to experiment with, someone tried this, and someone tried that. Right now, the answer to what type of music is recorded is the question:'what's going to sell and what's going to make money?' Bold to say, but back then, all that mattered was making the music, and if it sold, great. They were just school boys who had a passion and found a way to share it.

personally, i thought buddy was so cute & i still think so...it's a guy with glasses thing for me i guess Razzer Big Grin

i love his music. it's just fun to listen too. it's not like the crap thats out today. i do listen to lots of others, but buddy has my heart. i was born 15 years after the crash, but my mom turned me on to his music ever since i was a child.i can't explain it, but theres nothing like buddy. if givin the chance to change one thing in history, that plane would have stayed put on the ground Cool and we'd all be enjoying what he would have done for many many years. he had a fire in, it's just sad that he's gone so long now. but at least we can still enjoy the music he did make. it's timeless, simple, and for me, about an era i wish i was apart of Smiler

if i could change one thing in rock & roll history....buddy's plane would have never left the ground.....

All right people, I am doing yet another school project on Buddy Hollly, (the first one was how I discovered Buddy Razzer) though this time the story is a little bit different. I want to do a presentation not on the same old dry facts that all of us on the board must know by now, but rather stories of Buddy's life. Stuff like where the name for the song Peggy Sue came from, that candy bars were found all over the place at the site of the crash. Though I'm doing this presentation to classmates my age, I don't want to spend my alloted time on when he was born and when he died, cause those who recognize the name know two things about him: that he wore glasses about twice the size of his head (Smiler) and that he died in a plane crash. So, my plea is this: what do you think were the most interesting, or least known stories of Buddy's life?

Well first of all I must say I envy you greatly for getting to do yet another project on Buddy, as I've yet to be assigned one. FrownerSo, the least known stories about his life......well I think that Peggy Sue one is great, and to add that Peggy Sue was J.I's girlfriend and that the name and tempo of the song was changed just so he could score is a good ad-lib. Also, how the Crickets got their name is a good one, and not to commonly known I dont think. Mabey the story of Maria, the fact that he proposed to her on their first date and how he proposed(very romantic). I dont think too many people know that Buddy Holly was married at all (he was only 22 for the love of God!!) never mind know too much about his bride.( and mabey the fact that they were married in his parents house, kinda interesting) Perhaps the story of the gun, although that one might be a little more common. His real name possibly, most of my freinds were surprised to know his name was Charles. The fact that he was the first white artist to play at the Appllo theater, and the tour with the African Americans that followed. And if your presenting to a group of people that know nothing about him, the story of the cigar and the knocking out of the caps and what not is always a great one, if your classmates are anything like my friends they'll find that one very interesting.Im positive that you know every story I mentioned, so I wont go into depth, however there are lots more that I could list.(LOL on the glasses thing, that was about the size of it too!!)

I do know about every story you have listed, but if you have more, please do list them, though I probably know those too, it wouldn't hurt to have a good reminder. Truth is, I'm a little bit ashamed of the way I last did my presentation, so I really want to do a good job on this one. Don't get the wrong idea, when I say that I'm ashamed I mean that I did the presentation in about the driest way possible, so although I covered much of Buddy's life, I want to present it in a more interesting way with little known stories. I already have an idea of that I'm probably going to use a power point, and a vague idea of how I'm going to set up the power point, but please, any input is helpful, I'm afraid that I'll miss out a really good story that I should have put in just cause there are so many good stories! Smiler
Also, if anyone cares to make available pictures that they really like of Buddy, by posting them in their post or by setting up links, that would be a great help too.

You mean the one where he's with the Crickets on the bikes in front of some store? That's actually another good story, the boys went into some top of the line Harley Davidson shop to buy bikes, but the salesman didn't recognize them and thought they were just there to waste his time, so he asked them (and none too politely, it seems) to leave. The boys did, and went to some Mom and Pop's motorbike store (as funny as that sounds) where they were recognized and treated quite well. Would you mind posting the one without his glasses with the Crickets, maybe the one on his bike (though I should be able to find that one fairly easily) and any others you think are pretty rare or were difficult to find, if you don't mind?
Speaking of motorbikes, there's footage of the boys on their bikes at someone's house (Buddy's or J.I.'s? I think it might be Buddy's, I'll watch the movie again and check, though thinking about it I'm almost sure it's not J.I.'s house) and while Buddy doesn't take off his shirt, J.I.'s running around shirtless for a bit. Skinny kid, not sure if he has abs. Wink Razzer
The only reason that I get to do this project is that the teacher has announced that she wants us to do a presentation on something that fascinates us, that we love, or that we know a lot about. Well, I think that Buddy fills all three categories. In reality, had I not done the first project on Buddy Holly, I have no doubt that I would even be on this website, because I would have only watched someone else do a presentation on him, and I doubt I would have searched out his other music other than the one song of the artist that the presenter was required to play, and thus there would be no buddy_blue on this website. Weird, huh?

Yeah, I just read the bike story on the Bill Griggs site today. I laughed my ass of when I heard Buddy got kicked out of all those stores and then went back to flaunt his new Ariel Cyclone.Could you imagine how those salesmen must have felt when the realized it was Buddy Holly and the Crickets?Man I would have loved to see their faces.Yet another surprising fact of the great Buddy Holly.Who would have guessed he was such a wildchild.Lol. Oh I am so mad that Buddy didnt take his shirt off.Although I highly doubt there woulda been anything but ribs, its still nice to dream.Ill be sure to post those photos for ya, although I could of got you some great ones if Bill Griggs wasnt such an ass and let me copy the ones of his site.Theres this great pic of Buddy getting mobbed that I found kind of reasurring(I showed it to my dad because he keeps saying that Buddy wasnt that famous Mad)Anyway, Ive got quite a few that Ive only found once, and never found again, so Im guessing there pretty rare.Plus, Ive got a great color one of the crash site, which Id be glad to post for ya if you think your stomach can take it. Its amazing how much worse and more disturbing everything is when such a simple thing is changed. Mabey its because you can really recognize on of the bodies as Buddy because you can distinguish his yellow duster.Anyway, I took it pretty hard, so I thought Id ask before posting, you know, in case.

Go ahead and post what you want, I don't think anyone can truly handle seeing the crash photos, it is hard, although I would like to see them because it has to do with dealing that my hero is dead. Actually, a wiser, and maybe easier thing to do would be that the websites that still exist, just put a link on this page to them, and that way people can view the pictures if they want. With the websites that don't exist anymore but you would like to share the pics, would you mind just posting them? I don't know what Bill Griggs' website you're looking at, but the one I found which I believe is his actual page I can't find any pics. So a link to that might be handy too, even if I can't copy the pictures, just to see them. To see a man like that, talented, handsome, and just to end up literally in ruin, well, it shouldn't be. I want to do him justice in this project, because while I'm not ashamed of the information I presented in my last project, I'm ashamed of the way that I presented the info and I want it to be interesting, not just so dry, like I mistakenly did it last time. Btw, do you have any pics of Buddy's leatherwork, ie his guitar case? It ticks me off so much that I find stuff, and then I don't think to bookmark it, so I can never find it again, case in point the picture of the Crickets with Waylon Jennings when they gave him Buddy's motorcycle. I think I want to base this project on a lot of pictures, because not only were the fifties a lot different from now, but Buddy ought to be explained in more than words. Pictures, music, the man deserves it all. Smiler
Yeah, if Buddy had taken off his shirt there probably wouldn't have been anything but ribs!
Thanks for all this help!

Wow. Just "refound" the picture of Buddy's coffin-the fact that it's in black and white just seems to add more seriousness to the picture. No picture or anything in front of the coffin. So simple, very hard to think of Buddy even physically being in that picture, though I know he is. I think this picture is harder to view than the plane crash ones, simply because the palne crash ones, for the most part, are hard to identify (though I would still like a link to the pictures of the plane crash that you have) yet this one is so clear, and you just know. Think about being in the congregation. Being one of the pallbearers, wow. Knowing there is nothing you can do to bring your best friend back, yet he is so close.
It's interesting that while Phil Everly was a pallbearer, Don Everly was not. Was he asked and declined because he felt he would not be able to deal with it, or what?
Not sure now about the picture-one website calls it the Bopper's casket/funeral/wake, and another claims it as Buddy's casket. As morbid as this may seem, anyone want to clarify as to whose casket was whose?

http://www.buddyhollyonline.com/ this should work. Most of the photos on this site they wont let you copy, except for the ones from the Bruno sessions which everyone has. But, there are some excellent live ones from the Winter Dance Party which they will let you copy, plus that great color one from the crash site is on here. Ill try to find the original websites for the rest of the photos, and when I do I'll post them.

Wow. Just saw the ones of the crash site....the moment they popped up my heart was pounding, and now, ten minutes later, it's still pounding.
It just makes everything more real, I never knew that the plane was red, and the colour adds more depth to the pictures, making you realize how really mangled the plane was, and if that's all that was left, I can't even begin to think about how tiny the plane was to start with. The first picture, is that Buddy? And the last picture I assume they're standing over Ritchie and Buddy? Wow. They didn't go far at all. Maybe it's a good thing that the pictures that most people see are black and white, because now, I know so many more details. I know that the snow wasn't deep enough to completely cover the field. I know the plane was red. My hands are shaking, it's a good thing I'm typing this and can hit the backspace key.
Thanks for helping out

Told ya it was graphic. Its actually a really good thing they have that warning there before hand, I had my hands covering my eyes I was so afraid to look.In the first picture, its Ritchie, but you can kind of see Buddy in the background. And yes, on the last picture its both of them there standing over, and Buddys to the left I believe. They dont even look like they used to be the bodies of human beings, more like deformed pieces of the plane.I swear Im close to throwing up right now, and Im shaking again. You think it would get easier. It doesnt.....Im happy to help, but I dont think theres much chance of getting you that Crickets picture. I thought I could just pull it from my own archive, but apparently you cant do that, and I have absolutly no idea where I found it....oh well, the search continues.

I just thought of something that you should add into your project, even though its not really a story, its still pretty damn funny. When Buddy was born, the doctors announced to his parents that they had a daughter. I mean, how can you miss something like that? Mabey the doctors where as blind as Buddy.

Just for your information, here are the stories/info I have to date (and may have to delete some stuff just because of how many slides I'm creating-I'm afraid I won't have enough time!)
Anyways....
1st slide: birth name, the announcement saying he was a girl, various instruments that he played, that his brothers greased his violin bow when he came with them for talent shows, and that he was talented in steel working, leather and blue printing..until That'll Be the Day.
2nd: About his eyesight, including the story of dropping the pick, comparision of 1950's contacts vs. today, and that Buddy inspired namely John Lennon and Roy Orbitson to wear their glasses on stage.
3rd: Between Lubbock and Clovis. Story of how the boys would always try and beat the clock (CLovis is an hour behind) and that Joe B was known to drive at 135 mph, 220 km/h, to try and achieve this!
4th:the story of Peggy Sue, including that J.I. is ranked as the 3rd top drummer in the top 25, ranking only behind Keith Moon and Charlie Watt (no idea who they are)
5th:the motorcycle story, and that Waylon Jennings recieved Buddy's bike from the Crickets on his birthday (unsure what year)
6th: Maria Elena
7th:the role Buddy played in Waylon's life, including a humongous quote of how Waylon learned (very quickly) to play bass for Buddy and how (self-admittingly) bad he was at it.
8th:Apartment Tapes and orchestra sessions, including the story that it was a ten dollar bet that said Buddy couldn't write a song in thirty minutes, that produced You're The One.
9th:the cigar "fight" and Buddy's split from the Crickets.
10th:the Winter Dance Party (on the road, the temperature, the crazy way the tour was planned.)
11th:the plane crash-what Waylon last said to Buddy, what Tommy last said to Buddy, why it is supposed the plane crashed, and the prophetic interview with Alan Freed (they talk about planes crashing.)
12th: just pictures of the memorial at the crash site and a pic each of Buddy, the Bopper, Ritchie, and Roger Peterson.
13th:Buddy's influence on the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, and then how they in turn influenced music, and thus explains why we can still find Buddy Holly in today's music. Found an awesome pic of the Beatles having a pillow fight. Smiler
14th: my personal favorite photo of Buddy, with the words Rave On Buddy.

Sorry if I just succeeded in boring you to death. Speaking of finding pics and the like, how do you go about that? Is it just by luck and what have you, or do you actually search something specific on Google? I've found that searching other names than Buddy, like Niki Sullivan (though now that just mostly turns up condolences) or Tommy Allsup can bring up some out of the way sites, but........

Hell no, you didnt bore me at all, and Im really glad your gonna put that little ad-lib of Buddy being announced as a girl(Big Grin) in your project, it'll make it more lighthearted and should get a good laugh out of everyone. In regards to the finding of pictures, ya, most of the time its sheer luck. However, lots of my really rare photos i did get from putting in different names, like Charles Holley, Buddy Holley, even Hardin Holley once(but I did this a while back so dont hold me to it, I have no idea whats there now)Also, more than once, I've gotten areally great Buddy photo by surfing Google for Ritchie Valens. There are so few pics of him., that they usually just fill up theempty space with lots of Buddy photos(no complaints here!! Smiler.)The only other thing that I would suggest is that when you searching Googles images, click on every photo, and surf the site it came from.Alot of the time these will be the more...unused sites, for lack of a better word, and you'll be surprised at some of ther great stuff you can find there.Could you post that photo of Buddy, with the Rave On slogan on it? I dont seem to have that one,and I dont think I've even so much as seen it.And, just for some info, Waylon recieved Buddys bike on his 42nd birthday, which I believe was 1979.

Thanks for the year, I finally found a picture of that on the Crickets website, but they only let you copy the little one, not the bigger version, so it came out not looking so great. You'd think that for a man of only 22 years, it would be easy to remember all this stuff about him, and with a photographic memory, trust me, it's no problem, but it's more where I found it, which a photgraphic memory doesn't cover, unless I bother to look at the URL! lol
Just for clarification, I added on the Rave On, Buddy, to this photo. Sources say that this was taken at the Surf Ballroom.
I don't know why, but this is probably my favorite Buddy photo. He's in action, it's not grainy, fuzzy or out of focus, and he looks like he's enjoying himself a bit if this really was taken at the Surf Ballroom. That might have something to do with the fact that he's onstage, with his guitar, where he was supposed to be. The only thing missing? His bandmates. Frowner

I thought I could just pull it from my own archive, but apparently you cant do that,

You can do it! I just found this, go into Photos and Videos topic, then go new, and when it asks to chose discussion, poll or photo album, choose photo album. After you type an intro, go next, and it'll ask you what files you want to upload. Click browse, and you browse the files on your own computer that you want to share. Cool huh?

There's a little icon at the bottom of the page where the reply icon normally is....one of the icons there is to edit your text, and the other is exactly what it looks like, a little picture with a plus sign is the icon to add more photos.

Great thanks......Is there a way you can downsize your pics before you post them? I've got this great up-close one of Buddys hornrims on display at the Lubbock museum, but it says the pic is too large to post. Its too bad, thats the only one I've found of just his glasses......

I've had that problem a couple of times with my pictures...I just keep making them smaller until that message doesn't show up anymore! lol. I use powerpoint to post my pics, which is why they're all on a white background, but it also lets me change the size easily so that I can post all the pics I want to post. Hope that helps.

Well, not really, sorry...I dont use power point, I dont even think I have that program on my computer, I just save from the internet and the pic goes into a file made just for photos. I know theres a way to do it, just like theres a way to blow up photos, but I dont know how to do that either...I tried the edit button, but that didnt say anything about downsizing...this really sucks, I've got so many great pics that I cant post...

What is the Bill Griggs site, because the one I keep going to just has a couple of Buddy facts and stuff, certainly no pictures or anecdotes.

When you just open the pictures you've saved, does it open in a widows picture and fax viewer? If it does, click the edit button, or you should be even able just to copy the image to paint if it doesn't open into paint automatically. Resize your photo, and then you can save it still as a jpeg, you just have to make sure that it says that in the save as type part when you're saving. Then, when you're browsing to post a photo, you just have to remember what you saved it under (if you have folders like I do, it should have saved in the folder of pictures, so you look for that folder, open it, and find your file.)
As much as it sounds like I know what I'm doing to the point of being computer literate, this knowledge has only come after much banging of keys, some swearing, and begging of friends to help me. Smiler
