Anyways, this thread concerns the song Mona. Is there any story behind that song, and does anyone actually know what he's singing? Unfortunately, there are no versions where his voice is miked, I believe I have found a track where it has all of the different takes, and sadly, although the instruments are if not always, almost always miked, Buddy is never miked and it's hard to understand sometimes what he's saying. Is he really saying that he wants to move in next door so that he can see Mona every day, cause that's what I'm hearing. Also, has anyone been able to hear what he's saying when they keep stopping and starting? I believe it often concerns whether Norman is recording or not, and the tempo of the song, but if anyone is willing to contradict me, I'd be glad to hear what they think he's saying. The part where they keep saying hello is definitely weird-sound check?

There are a few takes that have been released and/or bootlegged, a version of all the takes is available on the complete story vol.1, and there is also some takes available on the bootleg box set What You've Been A-Missing. If you've ever heard of a group called Great Big Sea, well, that's kinda what this song sounds like. The genre is kinda sea-chanty.

Mono was written and recorded by Bo Diddley (Elias McDaniel).

Didn't James Taylor sing a song called Mona? But I think it was about a pig.

Buddy must have altered the lyrics a bit or something because although there's maybe one or two lines exactly the same, most are different by a couple of words and it may be the accent that makes it very hard to understand if he's singing "we can blow kisses through the blinds." And, I have no alternative to suggest what he's saying in that one line. I've never heard of anyone but Buddy singing a song called Mona, even the Rolling Stones website was a surprise to me.

if this is the song i'm thinking of, i only know 1 version witch was done by The Quicksilver Messenger Service, a SF group from the late 60s early 70s. think they were more of a cult band and rarely played on Classic Rock sttaions.

Darling is correct on this - Mona was a Bo Diddley song.

and yes, James Taylor had a different song with the same title, and indeed, it was about a pig.

My "Mona" takes are on a bootleg collection.

The name is "The Buddy Holly Showcase" from Tex Mex Records, a 7 CD box, very similar to "What you've been a-missin'".

I'm quite sure to listen to Buddy, not anyone else, so sorry to know that it was never recorded, although they had a possibility to make it from all the takes.

Let's wait and see . . .
