Anyone have information on where the unaccompanied version of "True Love Ways" came from? XM Radio's Buddy Tribute on February 3rd played this version. I've been listening to Buddy for 47 years and the first time I heard it was on XM Radio in November 2003. Sounds like the others songs I've heard from the Apartment Tapes but this version is new to me.

What do you mean by unaccompanied? As in no orchestra or what? To my knowledge, I thought Buddy recorded his vocals with the orchestra playing live behind him. And there was a tribute show on Feb. 3? Why didn't my station do this!?!?!?

I didn't hear any Buddy songs on Feb. 3. I did hear That'll Be The Day on the radio yesterday. That was the first time I heard Buddy on the radio in many years.

I do hear Buddy's stuff occasionally on my radio....not as much as I like and certainly it's more covers than it is his original work, but I shouldn't complain... I guess, cause at least they play his stuff sometimes. I heard his songs, like I said, more covers than originals, leading up to Feb. 3, but nothing that day. Last time I heard a Buddy song (original) on the radio was last Friday.
I can't be sure about this, but I was coming off my shift last year from Stampede and I think the chuck-wagon announcer said something about Buddy Holly and the Crickets, but I didn't hear the whole thing, it only caught my attention when he said "Buddy Holly and the Crickets."

What the hell are you all listenin too? I live in Edmonton (Canada for those who dont know), and no radio station around here has ever played anything by Buddy, the Crickets, not so much as a cover.....On Feb 3rd Much More Music (the channel) announced that it was The Day The Music Died, gave the names, said Ritchie Valens was a teen idol, then went into some program bout teen idols and that was it....could someone possibly give me a staion? buddy_blue, Calgarys might have some similar stations, what do u listen to?

The two oldies stations in Calgary are both AM stations, so you might be able to get them out in Edmonton, or at least Red Deer, but the one I listen to is 66 CFR, they play a lot of the 60's and 70's....which some of it I absolutely hate and other stuff I love, but they do play some Buddy Holly, Roy Orbitson, Bobby Vee, and too much Elvis. AM 1060 is the other oldies station, and they play some Buddy too, according to my grandmother, but they also play like the 1920's and 1930's, the big band stuff, and Frank Sinatra, which I'm not particularly fond of.

Gang--XM Radio is the key here. I don't think it's available in Canada but maybe you can bootleg it there. Channel 5 is the 50's channel and they play Buddy all the time. On February 3rd in both 2004 and 2005 they played a three hour tribute to Buddy and his music and they closed the show with this version of True Love Ways. No orchestra. Just Buddy and his guitar. For real. I think it's his best vocal effort. I have a recording of it taken off the broadcast and it's real. It's not Ricky Nelson or Peter and Gordon. I'd really like to know more about this recording. Can anyone help?

buddy_blue you have to get XM Radio. You might not know what it is since they advertise coverage only in the lower 48 US States. I know that coverage goes into southern Canada since the have listeners calling in from those areas. Calgary might be a little too far north. Check out xmradio.com. Subscription costs $12.95 a month. You might have to bootleg a radio through someone in the States. They've done a three hour Buddy special the last two years on February 3rd.

Can you get AM 1060 or 66 CFR in Edmonton? I know they play Buddy sometimes, but certainly not to the extent I'd like them to play him!

Guys--You might be able to get XM Radio over the internet. Go to xmradion.com and check out the three day free trial. Channel 5 plays the Buddy music. I heard Fools Paradise the other day. There's a requirement that you use a U.S. billing address for the $7.95 per month service but you might be able to get the three day trial. It'll knock your socks off--might make you want to move south.

i don't believe there is any version of true love ways other than the one that we all know and love.

for one thing, virtually every scrap of tape with buddy singing and/or playing, even dating back to when he was 13 and recorded a song in his bedroom, has been released. and no version of true love ways has ever surfaced, except the orchestrated version recorded in new york.

I felt the same as you, that I had heard about every song Buddy recorded. I've been listening to and collecting his music since That'll Be the Day first hit the charts. That's getting pretty close to 50 years.

I first heard this version on XM radio in November 2003. It was played again on their Buddy Holly special on February 3, 2004 and again in February 3, 2005. I have a copy of it that I recorded from this broadcast and believe me it is really Buddy. I can't account for there being no record of it. I'd like to hear from someone who has also heard the XM broadcasts. I'd post a copy of it but I'm not going to help someone spread it all over the internet. I have a feeling that someone in the Holly family has kept this song private and I don't want to proliferate it.

How can I prove the existance of this song?

I completely understand how you feel. I couldn't believe it was a Buddy Holly song when I first heard it, but it is clearly his voice and playing style.

I think this is a buried treasure and I'd like to see it become public but only through the proper channels. I'd love to have someone like Bill Griggs listen to it to validate it. Do you know how I can reach him or John Goldrosen?

Bill Griggs sent me a reply on July 22nd while I was on vacation and here is his verdict--

"I listened very carefully to the track and made up my mind.

The next day, I had three fans visiting including one who has been one of my readers for years. I played it for them and they all agreed as I did that it was NOT Buddy Holly on the track.

Some of the vocal inflections along with the guitar strumming made us all come to the same conclusion.

I will say this. the person, whomever it is, is very close and made me listen to it more than once."

I'll continue to try to get a response from XM Radio on where the recording came from and who is singing it. They are unconditionally calling it a Buddy Holly song. If I get more information, I'll post it to this topic.

good to see you back on the boards. thanks, also, for your tenacity on this matter of 'true love ways'.

i would've thought that XM would've checked out the authenticity of the recording with known authorities like bill before going on the air with it. it's like a painting that's discovered that bears all indications of being a Van Gogh or something. well, before any art gallery would put it on display, they would make absolutely sure that it was genuine. so i'm kind of surprised that XM did not do the same.

anyway, thanks again for seeing this thing through.
