When the first police arrived on the scene of the terrible airplane crash that took the life of Buddy Holly ,Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper and pilot Roger Peterson , five wallets containing five identifications were discovered and one of them was the wallet of Tommy Allsup who was at first listed among the dead , after being confirmed as still living Tommy said that he had a registered letter waiting for them in a post office in fargo and had given Buddy his wallet with the hopes that Buddy would pick up the letter (from his mom?) My question is this.
If I were to walk into a post office with somebody elses ID would I be able to pick up somebody elses mail? I doubt that I would, I doubt that Buddy would be able to get somebody's mail either , they are and always have been strict about releasing mail to the right person , for all the post office knew Buddy could have stolen Tommy's wallet and tried to illegally pick up a letter marked for somone else. Did Tommy ever pick up the letter himself ? do mailing records exist to prove there was a letter sent for Tommy ?It's not that I dont believe Tommy or think he is not telling the truth it's just that I've heard things about secret dealings and money matters that make me think the registered letter thing was possibly an excuse to hide what ever he and Buddy were up to.any thoughts or am I just a wacked out conspiricy theorist?

First of all, you have to remember this is the 1950s. That in itself should say a lot. Secondly, I think that even if the post office had refused to give Buddy Tommy's letter on the pretence that Buddy had really stolen Tommy's wallet, this is Buddy Holly we're talking about. I doubt he would have so much used his famous status as he would have used his gift of persuasion (the quote that comes to mind is from Jerry Allison, in the Real Buddy Holly Story, when he remembers how, when Buddy would be speeding towards South Plains Fair "to do something good for the county and the state, and the police officer would try and stop him and give him a ticket when he was on his way to do something good, and he [the police officer] is going to charge Buddy money cause he's hurrying down to promote this fair in this county, when most people like J.I. would just say 'sorry sir, didn't mean to be speeding'.") to get Tommy's letter. Certainly today I think there'd be SWAT teams swarming the post office if someone tried to use a borrowed ID to get a letter for a friend (:P) but again, the 1950s, one could sign their nickname to their driver's liscence, and that was satisfactory.
As for the secret dealings and money matters, there is absoulutely nothing to support that at all. The only money matters that seemed to arise (and I seem to think it was Waylon who said it was Tommy who took care of everything after Buddy's death) is the supposed money that Buddy's group was promised if they would continue on with the tour. In addition to that extra money, the tour package company would even fly them back to Texas for the funeral. What's perhaps worse than never recieving the money is that they never said their last goodbyes to their friend. They were all too concerned with not freezing in between venues, being positive about their situation, and jamming in the aisles to keep warm for "Buddy and Tommy to be involved in secret dealings."
All this aside, I wish Buddy had been able to pick up that letter for Tommy.

I think you watch too much Nick at nite the fifties were not the squeaky clean homoginized decade that TV would have you believe and I bet you could go to 1859 and still not be able to pick up someone elses mail .
You didn't really answer my question you only quoted from a fan movie and though Buddy could be persuasive I dont think he busted out with any Jedi mind tricks . If you believe that Buddy had no secret dealings than you need to read between the lines a little

nikliss, i don't know what kind of lines you're reading in between, but i sincerely hope they're not the white kind on some mirror.

why must people like you try to create scandal where there is none? Buddy's life has been thoroughly and completely gone over with a fine tooth comb, by excellent biographers like John Goldrosen and others, and nearly everything he ever said, wrote, and sang has been made public. and there has never been any indication of impropriety, unless you count a rumor about an illegitimate child, which has never been substantiated.

as to picking up someone's mail, nikliss,
this line of thinking that you're on is a veritable rabbit trail. because mail clerks are just like anyone else, and are inclined to bend the rules for people who are polite and kind, which Buddy is known to have almost always been. it didn't require "Jedi mind tricks" - it only required warmth and courtesy, and Buddy had both in abundance. besides, how do you know that Tommy Allsup didn't phone ahead to tell them that Buddy would be picking up that piece of mail?

you need to just put on a Buddy Holly CD, enjoy the music, and stop trying to find mysterious going's on and motives in the lives of one of the greatest musicians and writers who ever lived.

Do you know, where Tommy Allsup is today?

He's in Clear Lake, Iowa, in the Surf Ballroom together with his friends and Wanda Jackson (Let's have a party) celebrating the 47th anniversary of Buddy's sudden death.

I'm glad to have a factory sealed CD of Tommy with his autograph, his son's Austins's autograph and the one of my brother Texas Mike Bell, the CD is "For The Love Of Buddy".

Today I pray for Buddy up there in heaven, I'm sure he's heaving a steady look at all of us Buddy nuts here on earth.
