If there is such a hard time with using Buddy's name and image because Maria Elena owns his name (or something along those lines, I hope you all know what I'm talking about concerning all those legal matters, cause I don't know how to explain it) how did something like that get produced? I'd rather see T-shirts or watches than something like that with the likeness of Buddy Holly.

Britney's gum?!?! How goofy are people? I hope whoever considered bidding on that item realizes how easy it would be for me to shove gum in my mouth, chew it for a couple of hours, spit it out and say, "Hey! This is Britney's gum!" And I thought someone selling that Hanson kid's retainer two years ago was the grossest thing I had ever heard. Just when you think you can be surprised no more....

I'm not totally sure how these links work, so forgive me if this doesn't work. From Buddy Holly cookie jars to bobble heads, we now go to Buddy Holly coffee mugs. This may be the most tasteful of the lot, but I don't want to venture a guess as to what's next.

You know what? I bet he is totally laughing. Now we have all this high techno stuff to imitate and prefect what he originally figured out and produced, and let us not forget, he didn't use a lot of stuff. An echo chanber, and mics stratigically placed did the trick for him. Nowadays, there's voice synthezirs (I hope you know what I mean, I can't spellRazzer)and everything else. At least the writing your own music hasn't been totally lost, but admit it, you have to go pretty hard core to find lyrics that aren't commercially influenced in some way, and how do we know that even those lyrics weren't influenced in the teenist bit by some manager or something? In Waylon Jennings' song, Old Friend, he sings about "I've been thinking bout how long you've been gone, the things you've never seen". I'm pretty sure that Buddy has seen everything, and he's defintiely having a good belly laugh about some of this stuff. What I don't get (and I've said this before) is how is this stuff produced when Maria Elena still owns his name and estate. It's not possible to have an annual Buddy Holly music festival in Lubbock, but it's possible to produce coffee mugs and bobble heads of the man, and that I think that many of us feel that don't pay him any sort of decent homage, yet as an example, Fender refuses to produce a Buddy Holly guitar for the rock and roll star who basically introduced the Fender Strat to the world and without him, would Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix chosen Fender as their guitar of choice, both of whom have their own guitar produced by Fender? Boy, Buddy, I do hope you're having a good laugh up there in rock n' roll heaven, cause they sure got a heck of a band. You know, they were only school boys who had a passion and found a way to share it.

Don't triple post, or post one word. Thats called spamming and should be noticed by a moderator.

Anyways you took a comment someone made as their own personal opinion FAR too seriously. If you have as much respect as you claim you would at least listen to what other people have to say.
My friends made their own Buddy t-shirt, and that is really the only way to go. No complaining about Maria and her withholding rights.

Matchpoint, I'm curious about what you said about you're friends making their own t-shirts. I'm trying to do my own design right now, but am experincing bit of difficutly with my printer and finding a blank t-shirt. Anyways, that's besides the point and I'd like to know what did their t-shirts say? And if that comment about Maria Elena was directed at me, I'm not complaining about her withholding rights. I just want to know how stuff like the pictures that are on here are posted yet things that are of real value & homage to Buddy's life don't get produced.

Help me out here, buddy_blue:

I realize that these postings are old,but you've posted some stuff that has me thinking.I never realized that Fender never manufactured a tribute Strat for Buddy.Being a musician, that is a MAJOR slap in the face.If it weren't for Buddy Holly, that place would have been out of business in 1958.I make that statement based on the things I've read, and have talked to many people who played guitar in that day(no one famous, just some locals). They tell me that there were only 2 kinds of guitar:Gretsch & Gibson.Gretsch was probably most popular, because that was Mr. Guitar's(Chet Atkins) personal choice. If you've not heard this man play, you're missing out on a real treat.I've never cared much for country music, but you've got to admire a man who can use every finger on both hands playing that guitar!

My dad could mimmick this style, but it is far beyond me.In 1967,dad went guitar shopping. He went out looking to buy a Gretsch, but came home with a 1965 Gibson ES345 Stereo instead. He paid a grand total of $500.00 for the instrument, and for a while, was discouraged that he didn't save more money for the Gretsch. In time,he was more than satisfied with the Gibson.

The moral is,that all the guitar players in the 1950's $ 1960's were trying to mimmick people like Chet Atkins, and were going with Gibson or Gretsch.

If someone bought a Strat in these days, who were they trying to mimmick? And Fender still hasn't produced a line of Holly Strats? He was probably the only thing in the late 50's and early 60's that kept Fender in business! It makes my blood boil!

I want YOU to know, that in 1994,as a guitarist of 18 years of age,I walked right past a used Clapton strat(in EXCELLENT condition)straight up to a sunburst strat.Purchased the guitar, and love it to this day.I have my dad's old Gibson, and on my 19th birthday,he gave me a Chet Atkins Country Gentleman(Gibson). There is not enough gold in Ft. Knox to purchase any one of these guitars, nor a thief smart enough to steal one.

I sure would love to add a Buddy Holly signature strat to the collection.

And I didn't realize that there wasn't any kind of festival dedicated to Buddy.I can't fathom why.I was certain that there would be something once a year in Lubbock, but have never researched it for myself.I know that people like you and me are STILL making Maria Elena rich, but why not hold an annual festival? There could at least be a Buddy Holly songwriter's guild. There is too much emphasis on the crash. That is the first thing someone relates to the name of Buddy Holly.

What about his originality? The fact that he wrote,co-wrote,and/or produced most all of his music? And as always, there is MUCH credit due to the Crickets.I wonder if Maria and the Crickets are still on speaking terms?

The man and his music are legendary. If people aren't careful, they'll bury that legendary sound and talent right beside that airplane,in an Iowa field, and leave it back there in 1959.

Sad,isn't it?

The postings are very old and a little mismatched due to buddy's_gal deleting some messages, but here's a reply to your post.
The information I recieved concerning the production of a Holly Strat was from a website quoting Bill Griggs, whom is the unofficial historian of Buddy Holly's life. Darned if I can find the website now though. Anyways, I believe Maria Elena is fighting the company to produce a Holly Strat, and Tommy Allsup may have something to do with this too, as it seems him and Maria Elena have remained in touch. I don't know if J.I. and Joe B. remain in touch with her. Seems to me that during the Real Buddy Holly Story, Joe B.'s even a little bitter towards her, as he says something along the lines of that Buddy may have been influenced by his wife. He never mentions her name, though J.I. does. That's just how I read it however, Joe B. and J.I. may still be in touch with Maria Elena, I don't know. Anyways, Fender refuses to produce the Strat because the profit that Maria Elena is asking for (or someone is asking for) exceeds the 8% that Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix recieve, both who have their own Strats by Fender. In their contracts however, it states that no other musician may make more than the profit that Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix are making on the selling of their own signature guitars.
There was a Buddy Holly festival in Lubbock for awhile, but as Maria Elena still owns his name and estate, she's supposedly asking a pretty penny for use of the name, and there was no music festival at all this yeaar due to poor planning I believe, and if they did manage to pull one off it was simply called the annual Lubbock music festival or something along those lines, as they could not use Buddy's name.
Fender would have been out of business by now had Buddy Holly not picked up a Strat instead of a Telecaster (which Niki Sullivan played)or even just used a Gibson throughout his whole career, as he did play the acoustic on some recordings, and the Gibson was the guitar which fit those purposes. Without Buddy wielding a strat during performances, would Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix have picked up their own Strats?

If I am not mistaken,Buddy was even bigger in England than he was over here.I remember reading a biography on Hendrix, where he stated his influences, and Buddy was on the top of the list.I think Clapton and Hendrix traced the use of the Stratocaster back to Buddy Holly. Also, every true Buddy Holly or Beatles fan where the group name "The Beatles" originated.

It's funny, a little bit off topic but funny all the same: Jerry, Joe B. and Buddy almost called themselves the Beetles when looking for a name, but then Jerry or someone decided that was a bug that you would only step on, so they choose Crickets instead.
Buddy was much bigger in England and even Australia than he was in the U.S. or Canada. Again, funny that America welcomed the Beatles so easily when Buddy had to fight and still has to fight to get recognized in the States. Didn't they realize how much the Beatles echoed (in a good way) one of America's own?
Joe B. has said that before Holly, he had never seen a Strat, or any solid bodied guitar of any sort, though I believe the Strat was the first. "And when that gearshift on it too, and he could change tones......"

The Fender Stratocaster is a wonderful topic !

On my website you see Brian Wilson, president of the BUDDY HOLLY APPRECIATION SOCIETY ONTARIO with the original Buddy Holly Fender Stratocaster, the one he played on his last tour in the winter of 1959.

Aditionally you'll find some great informations about the 50th anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster and a legendary concert on DVD including the CRICKETS.

Go to:

" Yeah, Buddy ! "

I agree, why did this company not take the chance to produce and to offer a limited edition of a very special "BUDDY HOLLY GUITAR", from the artist that made this brand famous forever.

BUDDY HOLLY LIVES !

It's much better to obtain a wonderful Buddy Holly tribute album from the best Buddy cover group I heard in my life, believe me, I'm 59 and I heard a lot of them.

Yeah, Buddy ! and Oh, Boy ! from Runaway Express are for me the best ever cover CD's being published so far.

You should listen to the wonderful songs before you make a rating.

I think you can hear some of them on the following website:

RUNAWAY EXPRESS

I don't get paid for this comment, I'm a real
fan of this unique and best quality band from Colorado, I've just seen a TV spot from FOX NEWS from the day the music died.

News at ten had a special topic:

REMEMBERING BUDDY HOLLY

Runaway Express and their new and sensational Buddy Holly Tribute " OH, BOY !" including the great tribute song " CAPROCK ", composed and written by Jim Ratts, an unknown genius.

I have quite a lot of his songs in my archive now, great to listen to all the songs and to feel much deep down.

What do you know about Runaway Express and what do you think about this band after you have made your own research ?

Go to their website or try a search engine like

google .

Hi Buddy_Blue,

The unique sound and futuristic body style of the Stratocaster, which remains virtually unchanged after 51 years, would have succeeded nicely with or without Buddy. There has simply never been another guitar like it.

I wholeheartedly agree with you that Buddy helped popularize the guitar model, but here are some reasons why Fender was here to stay:

1) The 1st solid body electric guitar: The Telecaster aka The Broadcaster (1948).

2) The Stratocaster was so advanced in design that it's still popular (1954).

3) The 1st solid body electric bass (1958).

4) The first portable electric piano: Fender Rhodes (1959).

Leo Fender was himself a visionary trend-setter, much like our Buddy. Leo contributed as much to the sound of rock, country, and blues as Buddy did. Can you imagine Surf music or modern Country without the sound of a Fender guitar? How about music without the electric bass?

Though both Buddy and Ritchie Valens helped popularize the Strat, the real Fender man was surf-guitar legend, Dick Dale.

Thanks to Dick, every kid in Southern California had to play a Fender guitar, including The Beach Boys, who popularized them world-wide.

Fender was located in Fullerton, just a short drive from Dick's Newport-Huntington Beach turf. Fender and Dick worked together to design his custom guitars, and Dick would also "test drive" Fender's new guitar models. By the mid-60s Fender was purchased by CBS, who kept the Fender brand for the music equipment, and moved operations just down the road to Santa Ana.

balcony buddy, as much as i appreciate all of your thoughtful and intelligent posts, i can't agree with this comment on any level. it's simply unsupportable, in my view. a guitar is an inanimate object. people who create, record and perform music utilize instruments to do what they do, but they would've done so with or without a specific instrument. it's like saying that someone who invented a cool paint brush contributed as much as a Van Gogh or a Monet, just because these artists may have chosen to use his new creation.

so, no, i don't agree that Leo Fender contributed as much as Buddy did, and i'm not sure how you arrived at that conclusion. you are entitled to your view, as we all are, but writers and performers are in a category that is distinctly different from those who build instruments for others to play. it's apples and oranges - again, my view.

i'll give you your points about the telecaster, electric bass, and others, but as far as the strat goes, Buddy was the one who put it on the map. and prior to Hendrix choosing it as his personal instrument, fender had been considering discontinuing it due to poor sales and a lack of interest. but Buddy was the one who got it out there for people to see and hear, at least in rock n' roll. the pictures of Buddy playing and holding his strat had an impact, not to mention the songs he recorded that featured the strat.

now, as to buddy blue's comments, i agree with her to a point. Fender as a company would not have failed without Buddy, but the strat possibly would've, without his having chosen to play it.

as to dick dale, few people even know who he is, and outside the 'surf' community, few even knew who he was back then - it took a major star like Holly playing the strat while touring england, australia, canada, and america to make the stratocaster the guitar everyone wanted to buy and play, including those buddy blue mentioned - Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix.

it's true that the strat was 'advanced' as you put it, but the public wasn't really buying it until Hendrix made it popular. it's likely that it would've been discontinued if he had not chosen to play it. but Buddy was the one who inspired so many others to pick one up - or in the words of Gary Busey "Buddy was responsible for long hair and a guitar on every corner".

a clarification from a previous post above - i'm reasonably sure that Niki Sullivan never played a telecaster, but rather, a hollow body Gibson. photos of the Crickets always show him with a hollow body electric.

i dunno. to me, the power of celebrity only goes so far. i dont think anyone would pick up a strat, including Hendrix and Clapton, just because it was the guitar that Buddy Holly used. im not going to lie, i own a fender stratocaster, but i chose it because i know its the best, not soley because Holly used it.(although that was a bonus). an electric guitar is going to set you back a little, so anyone serious about buying one and playing does a little reaserch into there purchase, and the guitar has to suit personal style. i dont think anyone would go out and buy a strat simply because Buddy used it. i'll try to put my thoughts into context. i just bought a pair of boots that i saw my faveourite j-rocker wearing. but i liked the boots beforehand, i did not buy them simply because he was wearing them, but because i happened to love them. in the case of Buddy and the strat, i do think that the design of the strat, its albilities, are the main reason for its success, not the artists that used it. the guitar had to be great in the first place, or even Buddy would have never picked it up...i just dont see why anyone would go out and buy something just because they saw there favourite celebrity with that product. i dont know why the strat apparently wasnt doing well on the market, but i think its pretty insane if it made a comeback just because kids saw Hendrix with a strat.so, in short, this is nothing against Buddy. i just dont think people are so obsessed that just because Buddy Holly had one, i have to have one too.

it's a combination of seeing the artist playing a certain instrument, and HEARING how that instrument sounds on their records or at their concerts. the SOUND of the guitar is probably the biggest reason why someone would go buy one. but how are they going to know unless someone like Buddy or Hendrix is seen with it?

the popularity of the strat was ultimately because of how it sounded in the hands of masters like Buddy and Hendrix.
