I have been a HUGE Buddy Holly fan since I was 6 years....My parents swear I should have been a teen in the 50's...LOL...I was cleaning house and listening to my Buddy Holly Cd and I decided to do a search on the internet...And I found this great forum...seems like a warm place with sweet people

Yes....sweet people on a good day...just kidding.
I too should have been a teen in the 50s instead of a teen today (I'm 16)...I think the ideal birthdate for me would be 1940...that way I'd be 5 when the war ended and 19 when Buddy died, plenty old enough to remember both events.

Thank you for the Welcome buudy_blue...I remember when I was in High school about your age...I used to get picked on for listening to buddy holly and sam cooke...So I kept to myself...I have always seemed to have an old soul...Or at lease I know what REAL music is Either way...

welcome cute kate. always good to see new Buddy fans. im the same age as buddy_blue, and amazingly, i have never gotten picked on for being a Holly fan. mabey because now, stuff from the 60s and 70s and even the 50s is way more popular among kids than newer stuff. although people still think my tastes are...odd lol. but mind you i dont listen to very many english-speaking artists either. anywho, welcome.

WOW...it really is nice to see SO many young people in the classics scene! And odd is a good thing...Its the odd people that make this world a better place...LOL thank you for the welcome!

and as to those who thought you were odd.....well, some people like what is current and popular at the time just so they can seem 'hip'. but a couple years later, they wouldn't be caught dead listening to the same music. music to them is like clothes, and if it's out of 'style', they don't wear it anymore. but people who really love music for music's sake don't care if it's older or not - they just love it.

i think the ones who like whatever's popular so they can appear 'cool' are the odd ones.

Hi, Kate, I'm a newbie from Texas, too.

I go by Lubbock Bill. I just watched "The Buddy Holly Story" for the first time in years and it made me curious to see what's on the web about him.
I lived in Buddy's hometown for 26 years from 1970-1996. I attended Texas Tech where I got my music degree and then worked as a studio musician, concert artist and music minister - and it was a blast!
I had the priviledge of meeting most of Buddy's family, including his parents and brothers and Maria, who took me to dinner and to a concert (Brenda Lee) one night. She was fascinating and delightful.
I played in the Caldwell Studios rhythm section with Natalie Maines' (Dixie Chicks) dad and uncles for several years. And one weekend Larry Holley took the four of us to Clovis, NM to Norman Petty's studio to back up an artist Larry was producing at the time.
One night when I was at Larry and Maxine's house, to my amazement, Larry let me hold Buddy's Stratocaster. I felt like I was holding the holy grail.
While in Lubbock, I produced and album for Ron Griffith, the husband of Buddy's high school sweetheart, Echo McGuire Griffith.
I never knew Buddy, of course, but if he was anything like his family, then he was one of the nicest guys to ever play rock and roll.
I now live near Dallas where I just spent the summer playing keys, guitar and banjo in the country band at a big amusement park, Six Flags Over Texas. I was featured as soloist on one number in our concerts; my selection? "That'll Be the Day", of course! But many young people had never heard the song or knew it was Buddy's. So I'm happy to see that there are still young people discovering his music.

Welcome to our community, Lubbock Bill. You have had experiences that many of us can only imagine having, and we look forward to your sharing your insights with us from time to time. From what we know, we definitely believe Buddy was one of the nicest stars to ever grace this planet -- certainly a better role model than many of the rock and rollers of the last two decades. I have been playing Buddy's music on my Strat for over 45 years, but for the most part it's been only for my personal pleasure. I was in several bands in the '60's which did feature Buddy's music, but no public performing since then! It must have been electrifying to hold Buddy's Strat. As you say, "long live Buddy."
