Fats Domino
Fats Domino was born Antoine Dominique on February 26, 1928 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Known as the best-selling African-American singer in the 50’s and 60’s, Fats Domino released such hits as, "Ain’t That A Shame", "Whole Lotta Loving", "Blue Monday" and also covered the Beatles’, "Lady Madonna".
Fats Domino began his career with "The Fat Man", one of the first rock and roll records featuring a rolling piano and Domino doing wah-wah vocalizing. The record was a massive hit, selling over a million copies and peaking at #2 on the Billboard R&B Charts. Although Domino continued to perform throughout the 60’s, he never fully achieved the success he made with his earlier hits.
In 1980, Fats Domino made the decision to never leave New Orleans again. Complaining he could not get any food he liked anyplace and admitting his dislike for touring, Fats Domino has remained in his mansion in a working-class 9th Ward New Orleans neighborhood. He still drives his Pink Cadillac! Although he makes yearly appearances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and other local events, he has not been persuaded to leave New Orleans; not even from an invitation to perform at the White House or an invitation to his own induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
