You're right....that pic of Buddy with his glasses is really hot It may make part of the difference that he's smiling, whereas in the other glasses-less ones (mostly from his yearbook) he looks kinda confused.
It's funny, I was going to put that one of Buddy with his guitar (Buddy Live) on my album. I don't know where it came from either, but my hunch is from the Surf Ballroom, for two reasons. One, the look on Buddy's face says a lot. Two, and more provable is the stage clothes, which looks like the clothes of my fav pic (see the pic I posted in school project-the one I'm using for my project) which is from the Surf Ballroom. This pic could be running a close second as to my favorite, maybe it's because of the clothes!

I love the CONCENTRATION! one. To me, it seems like his body language is saying, 'well, I know what I'm doing, but I'm going to look at what my fingers are doing anyways so that I still look modest," which is exactly what Buddy was like. I have seen the Rest In Peace one before, but interestingly enough, on two different websites. One that claims this is Buddy's casket, and the other claims that this is the Big Bopper's casket.

To me, the London statue is just a little bit freaky. I know I would be freaked out if I was in London, walking down some quaint street, I look up for no reason at all and there's Buddy. Kinda weird, if you know what I mean?

Just watched the real Buddy Holly Story again and realized something-there's a picture shown in one scene which has Buddy in the studio, playing with Joe B. and J.I.-without his glasses! I didn't even take note of it the first time, then something clicked and I rewound, looked at it again, and then rewound just to make sure he wasn't wearing his wire frames (which are a bit harder to identify in pictures). The conclusion is this: there exists a picture of him and his bandmates, playing/recording nonetheless, and Buddy is not wearing his glasses!

I do believe that casket is Buddys, but you never know. I would have thought there would be a picture of him or somthing, but since there isnt, it could be either. I got the concetration one from the Fender Stratocasters web site, and seeing it just made me madder that he doesnt have a guitar named after him or somthing.They credit him for being the first to use it, and yet they wont honour him in anyway. Bastards.The London Statue one, I found by complete fluke, but I still think its a great pic. A little creepy I will agree, just because its so life like that if I was walking down that street I think I would have a stroke thinking it was the real Buddy. Its too bad there isnt a way you could post that pic from The Real Buddy Holly Story, I've never seen him playing without his glasses before. Its a wonder to me how the man could play at all with his eyesight, never mind without his glasses. Wow.....

He made it like halfway through grade school without glasses, so..... I guess his brothers and sister were always "pretending" that they needed glasses, complaining that they couldn't see the board and all this, so by the time that Buddy came along, Ella Holley was deaf to these complaints, as examinations had shown that her children had fine eyesight. Buddy got examined by fluke or something, and upon learning he was actually blind, well.
Though I know it's next to impossible to do, I would love to be able to try on his glasses, and see what they do for me, as I'm pretty near-sighted myself.
Part of the reason Fender won't produce a Buddy Holly Stratocaster is because in Eric Clapton's and Jimi Hendrix's contracts (both who have a Strat by Fender) it states that no musician will make more comission off their own guitars than the 8% that Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix make on their own guitars, respectively. Someone though, (Maria Elena?) wants 8% (or more?), so they're at a standstill and won't produce the guitar. Now here's a good question: Would Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix (I believe Jimi does credit Buddy for influencing him and Eric Clapton is friends with the Crickets) would they have picked up a Strat had it not been for Buddy Holly? Maybe one out of the two would have without Buddy, we'll give this situation a 50/50 chance. But really, people.
I don't get why there's so much fuss over Buddy's stuff, just release it for pity's sake! I mean, 46 years later, there's still a lot of people that are interested, young and old as this board obviously shows, so no matter what they're bound to make some sort of good money. Like those pictures of Buddy at the Surf ballroom, particulary those of him playing druns behind another group (as his drummer was in the hospital with frostbite). Really, all these hold ups with releasing his stuff is just burying him further and further into that Iowa cornfield, leaving him alone there, forgetting him.

And it's completely stupid to do that.

Have seen this picture a couple of times [of Last Call] before, but still got major chills when going through the slideshow and this picture came up.This all comes back to how it really was fate that Buddy was to (sadly) die that night. Though they didn't know it, Waylon and Tommy would cheat fate by giving their seats to the Bopper and Ritchie, so really, that night, if we want to get technical, Buddy was the only one who really was supposed to be on that plane that night. And nothing interferred. No one else got sick that they needed medical attention, taking Buddy's seat. No phone call from Jerry saying they wanted to get back together came in, delaying Buddy and causing him to miss the plane. Speaking of this, is the Busey story right in this sense that the boys had decided that they were ready to make up with Buddy and wanted to be together again after the tour?
I think that would haunt me majorly, if I was Maria Elena, to hear Buddy no more than 2 hours before he died.

Ya, apparently the Crickets really did want to get back together with Buddy, but they were going to wait until after the tour to get in touch with him. I think that would haunt me too, having spoken to Buddy just hours before his death. I bet she remembers every word of that precious last conversation, the last time she would hear his voice. And I too am getting very frustrated with the lack of Buddy material out there. I own a Fender Stratocaster, and I play primarily Buddy Holly songs, so it would be so nice to have some glimpse of him on it. I really dont understand Maria Elena. So much more could be out there if she didnt want a ton of money for the use of his name. There isnt even a Buddy Holly music festival anymore because the city of Lubbock wasnt willing to pay the amount of money she was asking for. I mean for the love of God, she should be gratified that after 46 years so many people are still interested, and she should give us a little more than some isolated cd realeses. I dont think Buddy would be very happy to find that his wife is restraining so much of his material from getting to the public just because she trying to live off his name. And I dont think ther could be any other reason for it. Its not like Buddy wouldnt have wanted his name to be out there, or he wouldnt have gotten in the industry in the first place. Oh well...I had a Buddy Holly t-shirt made a little while ago, mabey I can get his name ingraved on my Strat or something.

The second one you posted of Buddy without his glasses seems close to the one seen in the Real Buddy Holly Story, the two were taken probably at the same time as the one seen in the movie actually has the boys jamming, whereas this one is just them posing. I think this is the one I was thinking of when you first asked me if I had ever seen any pictures of Buddy glasses-less, as there are drums in this picture.
There's a colour version of the photo with Buddy and Waylon Jennings in the photo booth smoking, unfortunately, the site that it's on is one of those copy-righted sites where you can't copy pictures from. The colour must have been added later though, tinted or whatever it is.

Thats exactly what I thought that second glasses-less pic was, I just found it last night. I have the color pic of Waylon and Buddy smoking in the photo booth, and I could post it if you want, but I think it might be too large...I could try though....

Check it out.....I found the glasses-less picture that I was talking about,(it's in my pictures post) and about the only difference between these two pictures is that one of them is the boys jamming, and the other they're just posing with their instruments. Almost positive that these two were taken on the same day.

The pictures of Buddy, Joe B., Jerry with Niki Sullivan that exists, half the time Niki isn't wearing his glasses, though Buddy is. I wonder if this is because Niki, (like Buddy used to feel), felt that he looked better without his glasses, or that simply people were confusing Buddy too easily with Niki because they both wore glasses, so Niki took his off. This seems to be supported by the fact that Niki is only missing his glasses in the publicity photos, and not in the photos of the band playing.

After some pretty intese searches on google, I have finally found some new, and still reletivly rare Buddy Holly photos...God, the man is hard to track down....

The grad picture.........WOW!!!!....with about a million exclamation marks. That's the first time I've seen him look hot in a school photo.....got some other comments about the other pictures but will save those for later because I'm so impressed with Buddy's grad pic.......

On the Like You Need To Look pic, look at the strumming hand and you can see his ring on the heart finger. Although, this picture confuses me, because wouldnt that be his right hand? And on the left hand, you can see his heart finger reaching up to hold a string, and theres nothing on it....and I've never seen Buddy wear any jewlery besides his wedding ring, so this is a mystery lol.The autograph pic, i did not get from the Bill Griggs site because naturally, its copyrighted, although it is the same one and is from the WDP. Like always though, I was googling late at night and it just happened to come up, and of course I didnt bookmark the site(I deserve a slap lol). But it was of course a very uncommon Buddy Holly site, to which I came across by going into images and clicking on a picture. I give the same advice...go to images and click on every picture, you'll be surprised. Grad...what a sexy fluke....although I find his 1954 pic (which I have posted) to be rather cute...hes starting to look like the mature Buddy Holly we all know and love in that pic....As for the photo booth pics, well they just show that he wasnt all that rigid and mature...and thank God for that...

Heart finger? What's that?
Now I see the ring on his hand, I was looking at the hand working the frets and not the strumming hand.....yes, that is his right hand, so why would he be wearing it on that hand? This is rather far-fetched, but I wonder if it was to tick off Norm Petty. Norm didn't want Buddy to get married, was worried it would lose him his female fan base. I think that when Maria Elena came on tour with the boys (which she did at least once, because J.I. talks of how weird it was; Buddy and Maria Elena took a car and then Joe B. and Jerry were in another car, and it wasn't just the three of them anymore, that same closeness while traveling.) that it wasn't publicly acknowleged that Maria Elena was traveling with Buddy as his wife. Anyways, I wonder if Buddy put his ring on his right hand just to tick off Norm Petty, because the ring would be more visible on his strumming hand, though people are watching both hands equally, to see how he works the frets and how he strums, as we have already said Buddy's strumming patterns were.......interesting.

The heart finger is the one beside your pinky, and the one you put wedding rings on. I think, because Norm Petty didnt want the word to get out that Buddy was married, he asked Buddy to switch the ring to the other hand. I think Buddy would have agreed with this because he didnt want to lose his female fans either, although if you stop being a fan just because the guy got married your not a real fan in the first place. Wasnt it said that Maria Elena was just a secretary to those who were curious of her presence on the tour?

About the picture of Buddy's liscence:
Sure I know things are different these days, but I wonder if Buddy ever legally had his name changed from Charles Hardin to Buddy. Don't know when he would have had time to do it, seeing as how he died when he was 22, but maybe when he was 18, though legal drinking age in the States is 21? I ask this because on his driver's liscence it says Buddy Charles Holley, and is signed Buddy Holly. However, Buddy was just a nickname his family gave him because "Charles Hardin was just too long a name for such a little boy." (his mother) This is a governement issued piece of ID though. Wouldn't he have to use his given name and not just a nickname, especially because his binding signature reads Buddy? Just a thought, though I could be overreacting and making something out of nothing. This is the 50's, maybe you could sign your nickname as a binding signature. Who knows.

When you think about it, Buddy never used the name Charles. He was married Buddy Holley, he was buried Buddy Holley,and he signed Buddy Holley. I have never heard that he ever got his name legally changed, but I honestly dont think you had to in those days. As you said, this is the 1950s, laws about idenification were more leanient back then, if they were even created yet. Buddy was christened Charles Hardin Holley, but from birth became Buddy. I think the automotive place could care less what his real name was, as long as they got a signature! I was actually quite surprised to see on his headstone "Buddy Holley", with no mention of Charles Hardin. Even on Ritchies it says Richard Valenzuela,"Ritchie Valens"....perhaps they wanted it to be as the public knew him, and we knew him as Buddy.

Yeah, they wrote on his headstone "Our own Buddy Holley", making sure to put the e in there. I read somewhere it was like Lubbock was trying to reclaim him as their own, which they hadn't done during his lifetime.
I know on the studio outtake of True Love Ways, where you can hear people talking before they start recording, someone, says, "Okay Charlie," and you hear Buddy say, "Okay." But you're right, for the most part he never used Charles or Hardin.

You've got to feel sorry for a guy with a middle name like Hardin. I actually laughed out loud the first time I heard that, because I mistook it for Hard On(and we all know what I ment by that lol). He must have got teased into the ground. And a first name like Charles? I mean, I like that name and all, but it just seems so old, so rigid and sophisticated. And thats not what Buddy represented. Charlie on the other hand, seems playful and kinda immature(kinda like the name Buddy), so I think that would have been a great name to go by. And, if he went by Charlie, then my friends would stop calling him a hick and a hillbilly(those bastards!!!).

Well, he was named after both of his grandfathers, so it makes sense that the names were rigid and sophisticated, cause now we're talking 1920's or early thirties, but thank god that he was the youngest and got the name Buddy (as this is usually what the youngest boy, or baby of the family is called).

And according to the sight I got them from those are Buddy Hollys glasses, pure and simple. I was looking at his liscence again, as I'm using the pic in my presentation (we get the criteria for the presentation Monday so I'll let you know then what I'll have to cut and keep for sure) and noticed that his height is listed as 5 feet, 3 inches. So when the big growth spurt, because if he was 16 or 17 at the time of acquirring this liscence, then there are pictures that exist of him from that time, and he's still pretty tall.
What's the legal driving age in Texas, as I'm assuming this liscence is a learner's permit, as one of the conditions (besides the one that states he must be wearing glasses-could you imagine, Buddy drivign without glasses!) states that he must have an accompanying adult in the car.....

They were in England playing cricket (that was the word you were looking for, right? ) and I have the name of the place and all that...just too darn lazy to look it up right now. Will find all that stuff for tommorow. Anyways, looking at that photo titled UK....again, reading your caption I thought it read, "Jeez Buddy, we just can't get that thing away from you, can we?", meaning the Stratocaster. Both statments, that we couldn't get the Strat away from him, and that he couldn't stay away from the UK, ring true.

Okay, the picture tittle so eloquantly WTF () took place during the Crickets' UK press conferenceat teh Whiskey-A-Go-Go club in Soho, London. The guys helping the Crickets play cricket are England cricketers Godfrey Evans and Denis Compton. I don't think that's Buddy and Phil in the photo obviously titled Buddy and Phil, I believe that's Eddie Cochran, nothing really to go on just that I've seen this pic before and I'm pretty sure it's Eddie Cochran. The rest I'll see if I can find any more info, I've seen the untitled pic with Buddy and the other guy in sunglasses in the Real Buddy Holly Story, and maybe in the bip book. I'll see.
