Ok, am I the only nitpicker in the WORLD that is annoyed at the fact that Busey's playing a Telecaster & Stratocaster from the 1970's? Not to mention the red Bronco/Musicmaster he's playing at the beginning wasn't even a model until the early 1960's, and even that piece is of post-CBS Fender. To me, that's a blaring continuity error and stands out like a sore thumb. Discuss....

The Gibson Busey used was Buddy's original 1949 model, although I had always thought it was the sunburst strat and not the Gibson that had originally belonged to Buddy. Never mind the red strat at the beginning, it's ridiculous how he just pulls Rock Around With Ollie Vee out of thin air. That'll Be The Day can be forgiven cause it was one of his first songs (in a way, Ollie Vee was one of the first) but he just starts singing it before he's even been to a studio? Good song, but the timing doesn't fit.

actually, if those were the only errors in the movie, it wouldn't have been half bad. but the multitude of factual shortcomings in the movie are legendary, as many people have already chronicled.

I hate to admit that I really enjoyed the movie ...

I don't know which parts were wrong, but I think it portrayed Buddy in a good light, if maybe a little bit two-dimensionsal.

p.s. as to the original poster's comment, I don't think the wrong guitar is a continuity error -- it's just an error in detail that would not bother most people

actually have to agree with you - the movie is pretty good in many ways and portrays buddy as the genius that he was. some of the factual details have to do with:

1) buddy's parents being portrayed as narrow minded when they were perhaps his biggest supporters,

2) no mention of clovis or norman petty,

3) the crickets not accurately portrayed,

4) buddy knocking a man down in the studio because he was ostensibly upset (sonny curtis says in his song 'the real buddy holly story' that buddy 'never knocked nobody down in his life'),

5) major focus on maria elena and their six month marriage, with much less emphasis on buddy's music and details of his life.

i could go on, but many fans resent some of these things - and buddy's parents were very hurt by the inaccuracies.

anyway, as entertainment, and as a vehicle for helping a new generation of fans come to know and love buddy's music, the movie was helpful, and busey did a pretty good job, considering the shoes he had to fill. i have some favorite moments in the movie, such as when buddy is showing the young kid how to play guitar, and tells him 'that's all you need - four chords'. of course, most rock of the time had only three (the blues, sped up). that shows his genius in a very simple way. another cool moment is when he's being presented big bucks to record, but when told he'll have to submit to big city arrangers and producers, he says 'i'd rather shovel sh-t in lubbock' and walks out. of course, that incident never happened, but it captures buddy's vision and his musical integrity well. another great moment is when they're recording 'raining in my heart' and the violin player says 'strings with rock n' roll? will that work?' and buddy says 'well, let's try it'. and the violinist comments about the pizzocato arrangement of the strings (simulating rain falling), saying 'beethoven did the same thing'. this incident never happened either, but it helps to demonstrate buddy's genius and foresight.

I'm sorry, but I must add to jerry's list of inaccuracies.
1) Buddy could not read or write music. The scene where he is seen at the table writing could not have ever happened. It is true that he arranged the strings for the string sessions, with the help of Dick Jacobs. Buddy played/sang the melody/harmony, and Dick wrote it down.
2)there was no mention of Niki Sullivan
3)Peggy Sue was JI's girlfriend, and Cindy Lou was Buddy's niece. His girlfriend was Echo McGuire, although it is true due to distance when she went to collage, the couple broke up.
4) No mention of how the song became Peggy Sue
5)They were the Crickets before the cricket appeared at the end of I'm Gonna Love You Too
6) Although it's Buddy who wants to go on more tours in the scene in the car showroom and not JI, this was actually reversed in real life. JI recounts in the Real Buddy Holly Story that at one point, he tried to convince Buddy to go on a tour, and Buddy said, "Can't we just enjoy what we have? What if you died tommorow? You looking to buy a Cadillac or something and you need the money? You want a Caddilac, I'll get you a Caddilac."
7) There is no explanation as to why Buddy is in New York without the Crickets
8) There is a brief shot in the newer edition of mountains-Lubbock is flatter than flat.
Those are the mistakes I can think of off the top of my head. To his credit, Gary Busey was Buddy Holly (with the exception of messing up some lyrics) but this was a Hollywood movie with a Hollywood storyline.

you're right in pointing out that the crickets were the crickets prior to 'i'm gonna love you too'. that reminded me of yet
another inaccuracy - in the movie the cricket is portrayed as chirping on 'everyday'.

i've never known of a movie yet where hollywood didn't take some liberties and cut out some facts. surely, they might've done a better job with buddy's life story. but you know, i think maria elena had a lot to do with the script - hence, the heavy emphasis on their relationship. i guess the producers felt that it made for an interesting 'love story' angle, but meanwhile, they ignored many of the key details in holly's life and music.

say, have you ever heard that story (told by JI if i'm not mistaken) of the time that the crickets came back to their motel room after a gig and there were dozens of crickets in the room? it was funny at first, but they got to wondering - how are we going to sleep with these things in here? and so they began shooing the crickets out the door, careful not to kill any of them.
