Im 16 years old, and in saying that i have always considerd myself somewhat of a misfit in my love for Buddy Holly(i have now discovered that there are thousands others...) However, my love extends beyond the absolutly amazing musical genuis and into the man himself. Im a sucker for a lanky guy with glasses,so naturally i find Mr Hollys physiche incredibly compelling.....and just plain sexy.Please let me know if there are any others out there whos heartbeats give skip every time they see a photo of Buddy....Thanks!

I'm also sixteen and I have to admit that all right, the skinniness is sort of cute, well, come to think of it, the guy that I'm majorly crushing on is pretty skinny, though he doesn't wear glasses. I think especially after Buddy got those big horn rimmed glasses, it physically looked like he was a lot more confidant, which is always a good sign in a guy. He kinda lost the nerdiness too a bit (though it seems I always fall for the nerdy ones too!) once he changed glasses, and after seeing some trends of the fifties and sixties, well yes, Buddy was not half bad looking.....though he was married, and if you think about it, there's only an age difference of fifty two years.

Thanks for responding, its nice to know that Im not the only girl in the world that falls for nerds.As strange as this sounds, every guy Ive ever dated has always worn thick black rimmed glasses, although not as large as Buddys, but, hey, the bigger the better! I agree that after he got the horn rimmed glasses he definatly looked a lot more confident, and thats always a turn on. And yes, i realize that he was married and that they age difference is huge, but i never think of him as someone who could very well be my grandfather, I think of him as a 22 year old kid who was a cutie. Perhaps the one good thing that came from his untimley death was the fact that his fans will endear him as forever young, I know i sure do.

The best song that the Picks ever did (including all of Buddy's songs) was Forever 22. Because Buddy will be forever 22 in our minds. Sure we can speculate as to what he would have done in his later years, but not really what he would have looked like. Would he have lost his sight completely, seeing as how he was already classifed as legally blind at the age of 22?
I know, I find that the nerds often have better personalities than the drop-dead geogeous guys, though there are exceptions to this rule! There are always the really nerdy guys that you always stay at least a mile and a half from.
Anyways, yes, Buddy was a cutie. Espcially when you look back and thank God that he never wore pink pants or something like that, or at least there is no photo evidence of it!

Oh man I completly agree on that, Im actually glad that Buddy didnt really have the precieved nerd wardrobe(you know the plaid shirt and suspenders ect...) although he was a guy that loved his sweaters. Was he really legally blind? Ive heard stories of how, even with his glasses, he used to knock the mics off the stands because he couldnt see them, but I never would have imagined that his eyesight was that bad. His eyesight was like 20/800. Don't ask me what that means or signifies, but what I read was that his eyesight was more than twice of what was the mark (for lack of better word) of labelling someone legally blind, if that makes sense. I don't know if he ever tried or wore comtacts, that would be interesting to find out. I can't remember where I heard this story, but you know how everyone credits Buddy for inspiring them to wear glasses on stage? Well, I guess for awhile that Buddy himself didn't wear glasses, until he dropped a pick on the stage floor. Down on his hands and knees, J.I. decided to have a bit of fun with his friend and only give him directions like hot and cold, instead of just getting up and picking up the pick for his friend. After that, Buddy decided to keep a pick under his pick guard for those exact circumstances, and he started wearing glasses. On the DVD the Buddy Holly Story there's a voiceover by director Steve Rash and Gary Busey, and Busey, who had talked to Allison on the set of Not Fade Away (which was terminated) and Allison had told him the story of how before the curtain went up, Buddy would check the distance between the mike and his mouth so that he wouldn't knock his teeth out, but I didn't know he had actually knocked some mics off the stands. "If people are going to like me, they're just going to have to like me with my glasses on."
What do you mean he was a guy that loved his sweaters? I know he loved his jeans and T-shirts, but always dressed professionally when he had to, but I never heard that about sweaters. I love that about him though, myself I basically live in jeans, t-shirts and hoodies, so for Buddy to dress like that too, even though he was famous and was well-dressed at all his gigs and appearances is neat.
I have seen a couple of pictures without his glasses, the one that comes to mind right now is a CD cover, and I think there are a couple of his yearbook without his glasses that are published. I don't think I've seen the one with the Crickets-actually, maybe I have, there seems to be a dim memory of him standing with his bandmates around drums or something, but I don't really remember. Who was the interview with when he said he never takes pictures without his glasses and where did you find it?

Wow-thats pretty bad. Amazing how the guy was able to play guitar so well.Mind you, I guess he had been doing since he was like 15 I think, so it probably didnt matter if he could see the frets or not, he more than likey knew where they were anyway.Yes apparently he did try to wear contacts, but found them too uncomfortable.Iv'e heard that story too about Buddy losing his pick and J.I giving him hot and cold directions, and come to think of it that was on the video commentary was well,possibly the part where they were reahersing for the Ed Sullivan Show, but Im not too sure. Finally!! God, noone seems to want to came out and say that the man was downright hot. Mind you, as I've said, the glasses are a big turn on, but hes still really cute without them.I would give anything to have been a teenager in the 50s instead of now, just have the chance to see him live, to have his smile turn my way mabey for once. I FINALLY got my mom to say he was good looking, but my friends still think he was a dork .Oh well, when you look at what we have for guys nowadays, I guess Buddy is kind of a dork, in that he looks really sweet and innocent and like someone your mother would actually be glad you brought home. I think the glasses made him better looking, or maybe I'm just so used to seeing him with glasses that I find it too weird when there's pictures of him without them. So glad that he finally decided to wear them on stage, cause man......
What I wouldn't give to have Buddy have smiled at me, wow. He had such a sweet smile too, very shy, but I have a tendancy to crush on the shy ones. Their personalities are almost always better than the arrogant so called good-lookin' guys. And the skinniness works for him too, it's not like it's a bad thing.
It would have been amazing to have been a teenager back then. Coke and a hamburger for twenty five cents, but then you have to consider the economy and all that, and how the world was only fourteen years out of war, and how coke and candy was a major treat.....forgive me, I start to ramble when my mind's on a good looking guy. Buddy had it all.

Actually, I was born almost three years after his death. I meant old enough to be his mother at the age of his death, 22. I have a son who is 22. I am 43. Not quite his era, but close.

I agree, the glasses definatly do something for him,mabey because the look so natural being there, because your right, it definatly does look weird when he not wearing them(hot all the same though.)And as for the scrawny-ness, well, I dont know whats so hot about that, but something is.I had a dream once where I was really down about something and all of a sudden Buddy was sitting on my bed and he gave me a big hug.I dont know if theres any truth to this, but all I can remember is the mans shoulder blades stuck out like you wouldnt believe, and you could feel was his ribs. The glasses, definitely. He looks cute without the glasses, but there's a difference between cute and hot. Without the glasses he looks shy, with the glasses he still has plenty of charisma, yet looks a bit more confident. Maybe he's more confident cause he can actually see where he's going.

Uncorrected 20/800 is legal blindness. (20/200 or worse) I'm sure with his glasses he had much better vision, or there would be no point in having them. I wonder if anyone knows what his corrected vision was?

I asked my uncle, whos an optomitrist, and he said with vision like Buddys, it would have been unlikely at that time that his glasses would have completly corrected his vision, he would have needed to have some kind of surgery to have full vision, with no bluriness or blind spots. He also said with 20/800 vision at the age of 22, it would be likley that he would be blind, or have next to nothing for vision, by the age of 50....thats if Buddy would have never had any corrective surgery. Got to feel sorry for the guy...still amazing that he could play guitar so well, probably could barley see the frets...But still, those glasses...I cant believe he thought he looked bad with him, cause that was freakin hot.

Never mind being able to see the guitar well, it's amazing that he could do anything that he did. I mean, on tour, they were in a new place basically every night. Imagine trying to get around some strange place that you had never seen before, and get around it well, although, as crazy_for_buddy said, Buddy was a bit of a clown and would probably just laugh it off if he tripped or something. But really, the way he carried himself, anyone would think that the glasses corrected just a minor problem, for all the world he could see. Gotta hand it to him.

Yes, he was incredibly hot! I do prefer the glasses, but without them, wow, just so adorable. I hate how people think he was a nerd. Nerds don't drive motorcycles and play rock n roll!

Since I am fresh new into Buddy, can you guys help me with some questions about him?? Was he a bit of a goody-goody? He appeared to be so, so I don't think he smoked pot or anything, which by the way, musician were doing as far back as the 1930's. Also, what bands did he like to listen to? I have yet to buy a Buddy cd, which one has the best sound(as in digitally remastered), and what should I buy?

Buddy sometimes smoked cigarettes, but he was very self-conscious about being photographed with a cigarette in his hand, so there are only a couple of photos of him actually doing so. He drank even less frequently, mainly because he had a stomach ulcer. Buddy didn't do any drugs---he didn't engage in any vice that would slow him down or stand in the way of his goals.

Buddy's close friends knew that he was pretty damned fast with a handgun, too, but very few other people knew that Buddy carried a loaded handgun most of the time (and he wasn't afraid to use it).

Buddy was pretty meticulous about his appearance, also---meaning he liked his blue jeans and shirts pressed with a crease, even when he was kicking back and relaxing. As his career took off, he became more and more fashion conscious, and he was dressing very sharply in his final days.

Today, people tend to remember Buddy as kind of a nerdy guy because of his suits and bowties, in addition to his big black glasses---but the fact was that most rock & roll performers back then wore suits and ties, including Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, the Everly Brothers, and so on. What made Buddy really different in appearance back in the 1950s were his binocular-sized hornrim glasses.

His close friends say that Buddy was a fun guy, a little crazy and pretty cool for a West Texas country boy, and not afraid to stand out in public. More than anything, Buddy was incredibly focused on what he wanted to do---everything he did in his life, he put 110% of his attention and energy into it.

Buddy had a temper, understandably, although he wasn't known for public outbursts. He was also capable of lying, especially when dealing with the many liars in the music industry. He wasn't naive.

Buddy wasn't goody-goody, by any stretch of the imagination. He was more like a genius who knew what he wanted and how to do it and was frustrated by people who screwed with him and stood in his way on the path to success. The best way to describe him, I think, is wise beyond his years...

Buddy was into Gospel, Country & Western Swing, Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Rockabilly and Rock & Roll. Accordingly, he liked a diversity of bands and singers including Hank Williams, Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys, Fats Domino, Bo Diddly, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Elvis and the Everly Brothers, to name but a very few.

If you're just getting into Buddy's music, probably the best album to start off with is "The Chirping Crickets," which has a great selection of Buddy's songs, and was remastered fairly recently with a few bonus tracks thrown in. That was also Buddy's very first album, so it's a great place to start. You should be able to find it easily on Amazon.

After that, well... Once you're hooked on his first album, come back and ask again.

Ok, so we've all expressed how sexy Buddy is lol, but his look veried greatly over his short amount of years. So my question is, which "era" did you think Buddy was hottest in? 1) The Lubbock days,about 16-19, 2) The Crickets days, about 19-early 22, or the Maria days (couldnt think of what else to call those few monthes lol) which would be between Oct 1958-Feb 1959, all at 22 obviously lol. Aside from this, what is your favourite picture of Buddy? I personally think hes sexy during all those periods of time, but I would have to say my favourite look would be the Maria days, when he got the huge square glasses and the Bruno photos, and slicked his curly hair. But, I always love Buddy, I dont think he ever really looked bad, but he definalty got better with maturity. I am torn between three pics--the one glasses-less one with the Crickets, the first one I have posted in my album, the one pulicity shot from the Cricktes days thats really close up and hes got that beautiful smile and the more hornrimmed glasses, and the Bruno pic that I got on my cake, the one where hes leaning over smiling and staring into space. *is drooling* lol. Furthermore, anyone have a preference between serious Buddy and goofing around smiling Buddy pics? The smiling Buddy beats all, hands down, though we do know his smile changed. I love the pictures with him and Joe B and JI, both when they're posing "silly" and when they're playing. Even in the pictures you get a feeling that these guys are brothers and god help you if you try and separate them. The sunglasses I can live without, cause you can't see his eyes, and although, yes, he was cute throughout all the "eras" i think the school pictures make him look awkward (Except the grad photo!!!!!!!!) but the hornrims? Wow. The Lubbock days are appealing, cause that's when he would have been about my age, but Buddy, no matter what, I still love you.

I am partial to the look in his last photos. His features were beginning to mature, (we can only imagine what he would have looked like had he lived) changing from late adolescent to young adult. It's easy to forget how young he was. My son will turn 23 tomorrow; he is older than Buddy got a chance to be.(he, too, is one heck of a guitarist)
Okay, I'm rambling. I think my favorite photo is the one on the freezer. He is so handsome in that photo. I absolutely love him in the motorcycle home movie clip with Joe B. and Jerry.

My favorite shots of Buddy were, until recently, the photos of him performing at the London Palladium in March of 1958 (the main photo used on this website, for instance). Those are the quintessential Buddy Holly photos, in my opinion.

However, I just stumbled upon and snatched up an extremely rare copy of an old Canadian magazine called Music World (this mag was published for less than a year before going out of business, as I understand it). The issue I obtained is dated October 15, 1957...

And contained in its pages is possibly one of the rarest photos of Buddy Holly & The Crickets I've ever seen. For your viewing pleasure, here are Buddy Holly and The Crickets performing "That'll Be The Day" before a packed house in Toronto during the Biggest Show of Stars tour. This and other photos were taken exclusively for Music World magazine.



On the far left is Niki Sullivan, of course, having a blast; in the center is The Great One himself, intense on his Strat (and wearing his regular glasses---so this is before he started wearing the big horn rims); and on the right is little Joe B. Mauldin, pounding the slap-bass and singing his ass off, it looks like! Jerry Allison is out of the picture, no doubt hidden behind Joe B...

This is one of the most dynamic photos I've ever seen of Buddy & The Crickets onstage... And can you dig those white suits? I mean, I can almost hear the music, just looking at this photo!

I love the look on Buddy's face...pure concentration but a little of something else too. You know he's working at it. October 15 of 1957 the boys were in Los Angeles, California, but I noticed Canada at the top of this article: Canada dates were October 23 in Vancouver BC, Calgary Alberta on October 29(I have been many times unknowingly to the place where he performed), Edmonton on October 30, Regina on the 31 and Quebec on November 17 and Ottawa on the 18. Wonder what song they're playing since Joe B is singing something (background obviously but still something) yet Buddy has backed away from the mike.

Apparently the Biggest Show of Stars started touring through Canada earlier than you think... Here's the meat of the article in Music World magazine for October 15,1957:

"POP AND ROCK HITS CANADA!
The Biggest Show of Stars, Fall Edition, is rolling its way from coast to coast, and here are some photographs taken by [our] Music World photographer at the Show's first Canadian date in Toronto. They followed this up the next night by jumping the joint in Montreal."

[Live performance photos of Fats Domino, Paul Anka, The Crickets (above photo), and The Bobbettes. The article gives a laundry list of stars including Clyde McPhatter, Lavern Baker and Frankie Lymon, then continues...]

"The show, at the moment, is moving west and will be playing Vancouver (October 23rd), Calgary (October 28th), and Edmonton (October29th)."

So, the Biggest Show of Stars obviously got off to an early start in the Fall of 1957, hitting Toronto and Montreal long before the other venues you mentioned---Unfortunately, it doesn't give the exact dates of the Toronto or Montreal shows, but it was early enough that Music World was covering the story in its October 15 issue, over a week before the tour officially hit Vancouver.

I can think of at least one explanation---perhaps there was an earlier mini-tour to Toronto and Montreal to promote the official tour a couple of weeks later. This would account for the Crickets performing in Canada in early October, then back in Los Angeles when Music World published its October 15 issue, and then back on the official tour of Canada a week or so later.

Makes sense---performers today still promote their nationwide tours in a similar fashion, with advance appearances and promotional concerts before the official tour begins.

I went to the library and found the paper with the announcement that advertised that Buddy was coming to Calgary, and the actual date was Tuesday, October 29. So the other dates that the magazine listed as other Canadian dates are off by a day.
This website also has all tour dates from 1957-1959, and they match up with what I said before and what the ad in the Calgary Herald read.

Sad to think that (this was retold by JI or Joe B) when Buddy came out after a performance, sure, the girls would run and get his autograph, but when the "better looking guys" (ie the Everly Brothers) came out, the girls would toss that scrap of paper aside and hunt for a bigger piece of paper that the Everlies could sign. What were they thinking?!?!?!
And after seeing the footage of Buddy lipsynching Peggy Sue and looking directly at the camera many times, I still don't know how 50s girls could have found the Everlies more attractive.

These are the same girls that fainted over Elvis remember...something wasnt right to begin with lol...and that footage...Buddys never been sexier. Just the attitude...incredibly sexy. Those girls must have been insane lol.

That picture is also from before he had his teeth capped. When a fan brought it to a show and asked Buddy to sign it, the other performers, in good fun, teased him about how different he looked and how it looked as though 'he had gotten his whole face capped.'
