the hollies named their group after buddy, and george harrison is on record as saying that the lead break in 'peggy sue' is the greatest solo in rock n' roll. elvis said in 1977 "i guess the person who's made the biggest impression on me over the last 20 years has been buddy holly'. ric ocasek of the Cars has related how the album "20 Golden Greats" literally blew him away. and as to the beach boys, their music was clearly influenced by buddy, though they might not be on record as saying so.

what you created is a fine thing. Half a year later you should make a list of all the names mentioned in this discussion board, but you should have enough midnight oil.
It's great to find such a great quantity of artists inspired by Buddy, some covered his songs and some sang tributes to Buddy.

I shall try and get the lyrics to you asap by posting on here. Just a side note....The Stage was sung by Waylon Jennings, but it is about all three (Old Friend is just about Buddy) and Three Stars in Heaven is done by Eddie Cochran.

as I wrote Waylon Jennings is the singer of the song "The stage". I made a little mistake.
As far as I know you find in brackets after the title "stars in Heaven" and not "3 stars in Heaven". I'll come back later with the English translation of "Buddy Holly's Brille" from the German cult band "DIE AERZTE". My daughter Melanie is 29, she was a fan of that band when she was 14, they are still going strong over here. I have a lot of material from that group. Maybe you find the song or a part of the song as an .mp3 file than you can listen to the music.

I made a translation of the song "BUDDY HOLLY'S BRILLE" by the German Rock Band "DIE AERZTE".

Before you read the lyrics you should know that they were written with black humor and some facts are wrong, but that's humor. Rhymes are only in the German text. Great music, try to find the music as an .mp3 file and have fun !

The song Three Stars is very different from Eddie Cochran's style, understandable of course as this is a tribute. There are no heart stopping guitar licks, instead it is the same chords strummed over and over again. His voice is very low, lower than I knew it could go. His voice also breaks a bit when he talks about Buddy.

I doubt we can quantify how many musicians have been influenced by Buddy's music. To this day "3-chord" melodies are the foundation of a lot of different styles of artists.

I could have posted this to that other topic but then thought this could be a good place to espouse my theory about Lightfoot
being Holly influenced.
A long time ago a close friend in England who is a Holly fan and to whom I introduced Gordon's great music exclaimed that she
could hear the Holly influence in one of Gordon's songs "Cotton Jenney" covered by Anne Murray.
IMHO Gordon uses Buddy's hiccupping style very effectively in his original rendition.
In one of the many times I have had the privelage of talking to Gordon backstage I managed to ask him about this but although
he did mnot expressly agree about the Holly influence he did confirm that back in the early 60's when he was part of the folk music
duo the Two Tones (with the late Terry Whelan) they did sing It Doesn't Matter Anymore (another Canadian song of course)
as well as many songs by the Everlys.
Delighted as this also gave me the chance to demonstrate above how one can display a picture from another web location here
using the simplified UBB coding version of HTML.I also note that this board does not use the later and considerably enhanced
version of infopop's program(me) that "our" Lightfoot board recently introduced "Powered by Infopop Corporation

OK before I say more as a newly registered poster here I had better introduce myself
I have lived most of my life in Dorset England where at school our class took up the hero worship of Buddy Holly in a big way.
Partly as an antidote to Elvis Presley who was monopolising the girl's attentions!!
( I can clearly recall the shock in February 1959 especially as having had to miss Buddy's 1958 concert at nearby Salisbury
we were looking forwards to another chance on his planned return to the UK in 1959)
I spent 6 years in Montreal in the 60's where I became sold on the early recordings by Gordon Lightfoot who I saw in a coffee bar concert in May 1967
I met a fellow fan in a GL chat room in 1999 married her in 2000 and am now living most happily in New Jersey
Now regarding my Gordon Lightfoot picture which I will redisplay (the copy in my earlier posting was incomplete) I notice that there is no crib sheet or details of the UBB code system
that works here (only the "bare bones" indication at the top of the reply form).
So I feel that a few notes are in order
first displaying pictures:_
the prime requirement is that the picture you wish to display must be on a web site (anywhere) already

That was about the most important thing to him when it came to being on the Ed Sullivan stage.

I felt that your existing info was not clear enough and could usefuilly be emphasised as "balcony" confirmed when he told me in his earlier reply that my details were useful to him

great to see another Lightfoot fan - i remember listening to the show "bluegrass breakdown" once, and the host, Dave Higgs, featured bluegrass bands doing all Lightfoot tunes! it was great. i'd love to hear what some bluegrass bands have done with Holly material - now that would be cool.

incidentally, other artists influenced by Holly include the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, John Fogerty (CCR), and Brian Setzer (Stray Cats).

I'd like to recommend another influential singer-guitarist whose style owes a lot to Buddy, and that would be American rock & roller, Del Shannon.

Del came along about two years after Buddy checked out, and was able to adapt some Hollyisms without sounding too derivitive. He developed a unique minor-key writing formula, in the tradition of "Maybe Baby". His first hit, "Runaway" in 1961, features what could be the first use of a synthesiser-prototype in rock & roll. The song is now one of the most popular oldies of all time.

Though he never matched the chart success of "Runaway", he came close several times with consistently catchy hits like "Hat's Off To Larry" "Little Town Flirt", Stranger In Town", and "Searchin' (Follow The Sun)".

When The Beatles came to America, Del was one of the very few rockers who were ready for them. "Stranger In Town" sounds like Buddy Holly & The Crickets might have in 1964.
"Searchin'" was a hard-driving pop anthem, that entered the U.S. Top-10 in '64. Del's "sound" was right up there with the best of the British bands, and yet he didn't sound like any one particular group.

After The Bobby Fuller Four - who are essential listening for any serious Buddy Holly fan - I highly recommend Del Shannon for tight-harmonies, melodic Holly-influenced pop classics, and sheer energy. "Runaway" was only the tip of an iceberg.

Most definately "Weezer" but Elvis also influenced Buddy to go Rock 'n roll so theres kind of a double effect there. Indirectly there have been so many influenced and I don't think they know...a personal favorite of mine, Kevin Max, says Elvis was a big inspiration but I think without him knowing, Buddy is too...

Ha-Ha-Ha!!! You don't know it yet, but you have just reopened the official "Buddy Holly Community Can O' Worms"! I made the same observation a month ago and found it to be near-sacrilege with some folks around here. Good for you!

what Elvis did is to crystalize Buddy's desire, which was to pursue music as a career, specifically rock, rather than "western". but Buddy already loved black artists like Little Richard, Fats Domino, Hank Ballard, etc....however, being from lubbock, where rock n' roll was even a dirtier word than it was just about anywhere else in the mid-50's, it took a white artist (Elvis) to truly motivate Buddy to go for it. Elvis was one of many artists that Buddy was influenced by. "Down the Line" is one of the earliest Holly rockers, and there's very little Elvis influence to be heard. it's just pure Holly, with some good lines by his long-time friend, Bob Montgomery.

on the song "The Real Buddy Holly Story" by Sonny Curtis, the lyrics clearly tell how the local newspaper covered up the eyes of these boys who were playing the 'evil' rock n' roll music - that's how uphill the battle was. in the movie, they try to bring this out, but are rather clumsy and disrespectful in the process, by making Holly's parents out to be against what he is doing, which they were not.

incidentally, "Maybe Baby" is not in a minor key. it does utilize a relative minor, but then so do other Holly songs, such as "Tell Me How". "Runaway" by Del Shannon is interesting, in that the verses are in a minor key, but the chorus is in the major key.

To give just one specific example of Buddy's direct influence extending into the 21st century, there's a current songwriter named PB Ploy who claims Buddy as his primary influence. While most of his songs have nothing to do with 50's music, those that do (e.g., "Someday You're Gonna See The Light") show a definite strong Holly influence, not in the singing, but in the songwriting style.

To list all the new songwriters who owe a debt to Buddy would be impossible, and a lot of them today probably aren't even consciously aware of the influence. For one thing, you would have to list all of the songwriters who have been influenced by Lennon and McCartney, since John & Paul credited Buddy with inspiring them to write music.

i'm reminded of a story Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits told about being in a barroom, playing pool with some friends. the jukebox was blasting away, and a Buddy Holly song came on. right after that, one of Mark's own songs (from his group, Dire Straits) came on.

Mark told the interviewer that hearing them back to back made him embarassed, as the simple genius of Holly's music made his own stuff sound lame by comparison.
