I`m a 33 year old 'born again'Buddy Holly fan. When I was a kid, 12/13 years old, I used to play my dad`s records; Fats Domino, Johnny and the Hurricanes, Buddy Holly. Somehow, even at that age, there was something about his music that made me play his records over and over... However, being a teenager, my musical interest wandered off. Hiphop has been my main musical influence till my late twenties. A few years ago however,that music didn`t appeal to me anymore. Once again, rockabilly, rock and roll were drawing my attention more than ever. Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly are my favorite 50`s artists. Now I`m playing guitar (or attempting to), trying to master some songs of Buddy Holly. My favorite Buddy Holly song, and I have a lot of songs I just love; Rave On. Although Peggy Sue, Oh Boy!, Wishing are among my favorite songs.

i'm glad someone finally mentioned "I'm Gonna Love You Too" - that is an absolute classic. if you listen carefully you can hear Buddy's soft overdubbed humming on the verses. this is, of course, the one they had trouble recording due to the cricket stuck in the echo chamber. on the finished take, the cricket is quiet until the final guitar chord, then begins chirping in perfect time.

beyond this song, i love "Rave On", "Rock Around With Ollie Vee", "Rock Me My Baby", "Wishing", "Mailman, Bring me no more Blues", "Words of Love", and "Tell Me How" - well, i love them all, but these are among my absolute favorites.

by the way, it's easy to say that certain production or back-ups 'spoiled' a buddy holly song, but i think the picks and the roses did admirable work on some of the songs. many people thought for years that the Crickets actually did their own back-ups, which wasn't true. the picks, especially, contributed greatly to the success of Buddy's first album, and ironically, never got any credit for their work, financially or otherwise.

I would just like to add one of my Buddy favourites is "Ain't got no home"this is Buddy having fun with a Clarence "Frogman" Henry number....great cover...the would be King was SO versatile...i'm quite surprised this number hasn't been mentioned before...what do you think fans ?

My mother doesn't understand why I love this song, she hates it. I love it, cause it shows us Buddy's vocal range, and man, did he have a vocal range. And it's just a fun song too, I almost wonder if JI or Joe B had to slam buddy's fingers in a door so Buddy could hit those high notes....cause that is an amazing range, and the fact that he's in pitch too with no vocal training.....I don't know why I'm surprised though....this is Buddy Holly we're talking about.....

Hi Kevin, and everyone, You are spot on about Buddy showing us all how it could be done via Three or four , musos. Buddy was influenced by Elvis like all of us were. But Buddy got there by talent, alone No Hype,
When we remember that Decca turned down the first version of That’ll Be The Day” , that Buddy recorded at Bradley’s Barn prior to his recordings at Clovis with Norman Petty, the song was apparently sung in a much to higher key , than the eventual hit, and the warmer lower end of Buddy’s range was lost on that version, according to Philip Norman, The author of “ Buddy” the biography.

“That’ll Be The Day” will always be my favourite, along with the song Paul Anka wrote and Buddy recorded “It Doesn’ t Matter Anymore.”

I have no idea what it is about it, but I love Dearest, despite it not being completed. Just the way he sings everything (especially the umm oh yeah parts-wow) its totally rivlaing for my favourite, and I havent been able to pick one till now. That Makes It Tough is also way up there--just a great song, and I would have to say Buddy emotes most effectivly in it than any other. (although hes never had a problem emoting). You can really tell hes genuinely sad, and we all know hes thinking of J.I and Joe B. Aint Got No Home is great for a laugh, have no clue how Buddy got through it with a straight face. But it does show he had a incredible range (despite what measures had to be used for him to get up there , I still cant belive its Buddy, because for the most part it doesnt sound like him) and its alot of fun. (my mom hates it too, she thinks its "sick") *shakes head at mothers bad taste* lol. Mona would have been great too if he had had the chance to finish it--despite the fact that it sounds like some kind of trible song lol. Slippin And Slidin rocks too. Same with Smokey Joes Cafe--great vocals... see how impossible it is just to stick to talking about one Buddy song?

Wow, you might as well ask what my favorite Rock & Roll number is - 'cause Buddy's song styles are all over the map.

If I had to pick one, though, it would be "Rave On". Why that song wasn't as big on the U.S. charts as "That'll Be The Day" or "Peggy Sue" - I'll never know.

Well, my Dad's name is Ollie and I named one of my daughters Olivia so I'm going to go with Rock Around with Ollie Vee, even though it wasn't written by Buddy. It's hard to call that an honest answer though. Words of Love, True Love Ways, Not Fade Away are all also favorites.

your comment about 'rave on' is right on. it is a wonderful recording, and to think that it's only a little over 90 seconds long - WOW.

i think the reason for its lack of chart success is two fold - one, the record company didn't promote Buddy's stuff much, and two, the song was so far ahead of its time. just an amazing piece of rock n' roll history, all wrapped up in one minute and 48 seconds of magic. but you know, that could be said of many of Buddy's songs - they didn't chart or weren't even released, and yet, looking back now, they are sheer brilliance.

but an illustration of the way 'rave on' was received is the following quote from a NBC reviewer - "....mood music for stealing
hubcaps".

I've always liked the gentle simplicity of "Well Allright," as Buddy sings it with such obvious sincerity. Let's face it though, Buddy was at home no matter what style of music he sung.If it is an uptempo track you are after. then "Early in the Morning" takes some beating. Buddy's obvious enthusiasm and the rasping sax are a brilliant combination.

I would choose a couple of lesser known classics. 'That's What They Say'and 'Last Night'.

'last night' is interesting as it was one of the only songs that Joe B. Mauldin had any writing involvement with.

I find that many of Buddy's lesser known tracks, like Last Night, That's What They Say, Umm Oh Yeah, That Makes it Tough etc are as strong as his hit singles. I think the same applies to Eddie Cochran and Roy Orbison.

I have to admit that my favourite Buddy song is "Words of Love" - the way he sings the lyrics, "hold me close and tell me how you feeeel-a, tell me love is real-aaah, mmm mmm mmmmmm"

I just love the way he sings. It's not only his voice, it's also his pronounciation.

Does this mean songs Holly wrote or just songs he covered?
I seem to remember that Now we're one was written by Bobby Darin and it was a publisher thing somewhere re Holly's recording of it together with Early in the morning both songs being a Darin single.
Whatever Holly's true genius was his way with lyrics which would be carried on via the Beatles for a year or two
