Sam Donahue Biography

A well-respected tenor saxophonist, Sam Donahue was putting together bands at the age of 15. He played with various musicians such as Gene Krupa, Benny Goodman and Harry James. Donahue then led his own big band in which he recorded over 20 titles between 1940 and 1942. Donahue soon joined the Army in 1942 and took over the Artie Shaw Navy Band.

After his discharge, he made recordings for Capitol without any hits. He continued to work with big hit acts such as Tommy Dorsey and the Billy May Orchestra and headed a big band near the end of the 1950’s.

Sam Donahue died in 1974.
