The Cadillacs Biography
| First formed as “The Carnations” in 1953, Earl Carroll, Bobby Phillips, Lavern Drake and Gus Willnghan soon changed their name to “The Cadillacs” after the addition of the fifth member, James “Poppa” Clark. Their first recordings in 1954 were “Josie”, “Gloria” and “Wonder Why”. |
In 1955 Willingham and Clark left the group and were replaced by Earl Wade and Charles Brooks. Later that year, the group released their biggest hit “Speedo”. Lavern Drake later left the group in 1956 and was replaced by James Bailey.
In 1957, band issues caused the band to split into two different groups: The Four Cadillacs and Earl Carroll and the Cadillacs. Various problems caused the members to change names and line-ups over the next ten years. Jesse Powel and The Caddys, Speedo and the Pearls, The Solitaires, The Coasters and the Jive Five were all formed by members of The Cadillacs!
