Biography: Carl Bunch

Born November 24th, 1939 in Big Springs Texas and began traveling in a dance duo with his younger sister at a very young age. Upon finding bone tumors in his right leg, he spent over a year in hospital in traction. After three years of recuperating from surgery, he started to play drums to get coordination back in his feet. His love for drumming soon developed and Carl began practicing the “skins” five to eight hours a day, every day! |
As a member of “The Poor Boys”, Carl recorded at Norm Petty’s Studio in Clovis, New Mexico. Unbeknownst to Carl, Buddy Holly was in the control room of the studio watching Carl play. Carl made such an impression on Buddy that in December 1958, Buddy asked Tommy Allsup to contact Carl and ask him to play drums for Buddy during the Winter Dance Tour. He became Buddy Holly’s drummer up until he received serious frostbite while traveling between shows on the rickety bus ride after the January 31st show in Duluth, MN. He came back to the tour two days after Buddy’s tragic plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper and pilot Roger Peterson. After the plane crash, an uninformed Buddy biographer listed him as deceased and Carl was forgotten about for years. Carl Bunch, however, is alive and still participates in Buddy Holly-related festivals.
