ARTISTS INFLUENCED BY BUDDY HOLLY
Elvis Costello
Born Declan Patrick Aloysius McManus in 1954, Elvis Costello is a popular British musician, singer and songwriter of Irish Descent. His stage name is a mix of Elvis Presley’s first name and his mother’s maiden name. Best known for his performances with The Attractions and The Imposters, he established himself as a unique and original voice in the 1980’s.
His trademark glasses bear a striking resemblance to Buddy Holly! His recordings include "This Year’s Model", "Imperial Bedroom", "King of America", and "When I Was Cruel". He has also created spectacular collaborations with Burt Bacharach, the Brodsky Quartet and Paul McCartney. His music has been covered by many influential artists such as George Jones, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and No Doubt. In 2003, Costello married Canadian jazz singer and pianist Diana Krall at the London estate of Elton John. Elvis Costello’s most recent release "The Delivery Man", has been described by Jon Pareles of The New York Times as an album "steeped in Southern Americana: the gospel-rooted groves of Memphis soul, touches of pedal steel guitar, Southern-rooted guest singers including Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams and the storytelling that Southern should shares with country music." Quotes
The image worked so well that to the casual music fan, Elvis Costello will always be frozen in time as the pigeon-toed geek in Buddy Holly glasses on the cover of ""My Aim Is True" - unless you count the fluke success of "Everyday I Write the Book," his U.S. breakthrough, or "Veronica," an even bigger hit he wrote with Paul McCartney.
Jake Riviera, his manager, described him as "Baggy-suited and bespectacled, a Buddy Holly on acid"!
